The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa on Friday issued a brief alert regarding crime and security in Ethiopia. It sees a possible spontaneous and ubiquitous demonstration in the country, and advises U.S. citizens in the country to stay away from it.
There have been recurring incidents of mass passenger kidnappings and killings – particularly in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. Incidents of ransom kidnapping have also been reported in the Amhara and Tigray regions of Ethiopia. However, the prediction the U.S. embassy is making – and it is presumed that the U.S. embassy might have intelligence information – appears to be different from one that the country has been experiencing.
Active and large scale military conflict has been underway in the Amhara region of Ethiopia for nearly two years now. Also, there is an ongoing conflict in the Oromia region of Ethiopia where there has been a notable security crisis.
The security alert from the U.S. embassy lacks spatial specification. The ruling party has been making arrests in the capital Addis Ababa over an alleged plan to pose danger to the “constitutional order.” Recent reports from multiple local media outlets indicated that over 60 youth disappeared in the capital Addis Ababa.
