The version I heard was when Aklilu habtewold? wanted to address the domination of business by Arabs/indians, a set of wise gurage persons approached the government promising to outdo the foreigners and asked gov to lend them some money to pay back with interest. I think they did nice business kicking out foreigners and prospered. I heard the government had trouble receiving the interest because there was no formal way of accepting the money back. The story does not stop here but forgot the conclusion about the pay back. Today let alone Gurage Tigre and galla have become obsessed with trading so much so they cornered Gurage as they had gov favor during their ethnic rule. Specially controlling ጉምሩክ is impotant. When ethnic rule is in place corrupt people and the gov favored ethnic gets free commodity pass through ጉምሩክ system enriching individuals at the expense of others and the country!

I do not buy your story. I doubt Gurages will propose to the gov to kick out Arab traders even if there were rumors gov was not pleased with Arabs/Indians.

In my opinion, the Habteweld brothers had not been recognized and honoured, as it is supposed to be in Ethiopia. Sadly, the three of them were killed by their own countrymen, Ethiopian army officers.
The Habtewold brothers, Aklilu, Makonnen, and Akalework, were prominent figures in Ethiopian history, particularly during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie. They were among the first educated Ethiopians from ordinary families, not the nobility, and they played significant roles in the modernization of the country.

Aklilu Habte-Wold: Aklilu was a Prime Minister of Ethiopia and a key figure in modernizing the country. He was assassinated by the Derg regime along with his brother, Akalework, in 1974. Aklilu's contributions to Ethiopia included negotiating the Paris Peace Conference with Italy, reuniting Eritrea, Afambo, and Gambela with Ethiopia, drafting a new constitution, and establishing Ethiopian Airlines.
Makonnen Habte-Wold: Makonnen, along with his brothers, benefited from the patronage of Emperor Haile Selassie and received a good education. He also played a significant role in the modernization of Ethiopia.
Akalework Habte-Wold: Akalework, like his brothers, was educated thanks to the Emperor's patronage. He was also assassinated by the Derg along with his brother, Aklilu, in 1974.

MEKONNEN HABTE WOLD

Mekonnen H.W was instrumental in setting up The Ethiopian Patriotic Association before the outbreak of the Italian war of 1935-36. He used the association to mobilize the Ethiopian public for the war effort. After the Fascist invasion Mekonnen went into exile, where he founded and run the external wing of the Ethiopian Patriotic Association.

Soon after liberation in 1941, Mekonnen was appointed Minister of Commerce & Agriculture. He used his position to withstand British machination to control Ethiopian finance & foreign trade. Mekonnen helped establish the Development Bank & The Ethiopian National Corporation to facilitate Import & export trade of the country. He also helped to create The Ethiopian Society for Commerce & Transport popularly known as (ማሕበር ቤት) to import items like cotton goods. The British, who resented tight control of the import-export trade, dubbed Mekonnen as an "ultra nationalist" and accused him of extortionist practices.

Mekonnen created, fostered and promoted "የሐገር ፍቅር ማሕበር" (Love of Motherland Foundation) as a center for modern music, drama & a forum for public debate and lectures. The foundation even ventured into the media world with the launching of a newspaper called "የኢትዮጵያ ድምጽ" (Voice of Ethiopia) and a magazine named "መነን" (Menen) in 1955. It also served as a venue for promoting harmony between Christians & Muslims, a matter that constantly preoccupied Mekonnen both in his private capacity and as part of his government charge. An office to facilitate the annual pilgrimage to Mecca was thus setup in the foundation.

Mekonnen briefly served as a Minister of Interior, but it was Ministry of Finance that he probably left his enduring impact on the Imperial bureaucracy. His tenure was marked by distinctly personal type of leadership & a premium on enhancing income & curtailing expenditure. A man of frugal tastes and strict disposition, Mekonnen Habte Wold was also known for his hard work & generosity to those in need.

When the Neway brothers attempted a coup on Emperor Haile Sellassie in Deceber 1960, Mekonnen become one of the prominent personalities held by the plotters in the Genete Leul Palace. The coup was crushed by forces loyal to the emperor and the plotters massacred Mekonnen Habte Wold and 18 other ministers, generals & patriots in the Green Saloon of Genete Leul Palace in their final act of desperation.
