In Defense of the Amhara Cause for Sheer Survival

If you ask me “Why Amhara is fighting?” My unequivocal answer is sheer survival in Ethiopia. Sheer survival requires unfettered unity of purpose articulated in the form of a clear and compelling political road map, strong institutions like political, military, public relations and public diplomacy, resource mobilization as well as capable leadership at all levels. It takes a village.

I would like to urge you to consider the notion that Ethiopia would not exist without Amhara defending it; fighting and dying for it; and persecuted for it. I do not recall a time when Amhara identified itself as a tribe. You would think this would place Amhara at the top of the Ethiopian nation-building pyramid. The opposite is now true.

I have always fought for Ethiopia, defending its place on the world stage, championing its causes and core national interests like its sovereign rights to the Blue Nile, its access to the Red Sea and more.

Similarly, Amhara academics, intellectuals, politicians, media personalities and thought leaders like me have, for too long, refrained from identifying ourselves as Amhara. This is a costly mindset that must change now. Amhara has become a “nonperson” subject to total annihilation.

I subscribe to the argument that recurrent conflict and war affects all Ethiopians. Conflict ravaged Tigray. It is ravaging the Amhara and Oromia regions. The cost of these wars over the past 7 years alone is in tens of billions of dollars. The real number of innocent civilians killed is unknown. One million perished during the so-called Northern or Tigray war alone. In the Amhara region, drone strikes kill dozens of civilians each day.

The epicenter of ethnic annihilation is the Amhara region. The target is Amhara. I say annihilation instead of genocide for a reason. Genocide has a start and an end date. The Amhara case is different.

Genocide of European Jews by Nazi Germany took place over the period 1941 and 1945. More than six million perished.
The Ottoman regime of Türkiye committed genocide against Armenians between 1915 and 1923. An estimated 1.2 million Armenians were slaughtered like sheep. This is the first case of genocide in the 20th century. The subject gained traction.
In Africa, genocide against the Tutsi took place between April 7 and July 19, 1994, the shortest genocide in history. Close to one million people were slaughtered.
The systematic annihilation of Amhara began in earnest in the 1970s. The Amhara intellectual class perished in the hundreds of thousands. The Socialist military dictatorship as well as the TPLF participated in large scale massacres of Amhara owing to different ideological reasons.

If you take 1974 as a cut off point, Amhara has been dying for half a century. Amhara massacres have continued unabated and unchecked for reasons:

The international community does not seem to care.
Ethnic elites led by national liberation fronts operate coordinated critiquing Amhara for Ethiopia’s miserable conditions.
The central or federal government is a core part of Amhara annihilation.
Amhara elites within and outside the country fragmented.
Amhara enemies penetrate the Amhara Fano movement.
Its remarkable feat on the battle ground notwithstanding, Amhara Fano has yet to scale up and establish a strong central command with strong leadership, craft a political agenda or road map and establish the requisite resources to support it.
Unlike TPLF and OLF who speak from the same script, Amhara does not have a unified voice or media that supports its cause.
Amhara adversaries work day and night to fragment the Amhara Diaspora.
Ethiopia’s institutions like the Constitution, the military establishment, and the administrative structure are all designed to diminish Amhara.
Amhara is at war against a system that wishes to annihilate it in all manners possible: political, economic, financial, spiritual, and psychological.

Tragically, this war for the sheer survival of Amhara must first deal with Amhara who betrayed its cause. This is critical and unaddressed openly and boldly.

Amhara Fano is fighting with time as much as it is fighting with its tormentors. Mortal enemies have penetrated and encircled Amhara Fano on all fronts. This is why it must scale up quickly. Permanent war is not an option. It has an obligation to respond to the Amhara population for which it stands and sacrifices.

What does Amhara need?

Amhara wishes to enjoy peace, and stability denied by an ethnic federal system. The sooner the system goes the better not only for Amhara but for the rest of Ethiopia.
Amhara has enormous potential to fight back, survive and thrive. This requires strong Amhara institutions like a central military command, political party, a clear and compelling political program in the form of a road map, robust media, PR, and public diplomacy that supports the cause and the material resources.
Amhara deserves an Amhara diaspora that coalesces and speaks from the same script and supports the cause in unison.
Amhara Fano and its supporters must reach out to the rest of Ethiopia that is also in pain.
Amhara Fano would have achieved more had it dealt with Amhara who provides intelligence, material, and human support to those who wish to annihilate Amhara. It must deal with this hurdle quickly.
Amhara Fano must never compromise regarding the sheer survival of Amhara.
The immediate unity of Amhara Fano in all four Amhara regions: Gondar, Gojjam, Shoa and Wollo and in the diaspora is no longer an option. It is a necessity for sheer survival.
In my estimation, there cannot be peace and stability let alone growth and development in Ethiopia until and unless the government of Ethiopia and national liberation fronts like the TPLF and OLF abandon hatred towards and plot to annihilate Amhara.

The reason is Amara must abandon its Christian faith, culture, flag, this is the reason.
