Aiming to increase food security and reduce reliance on imported foods, Saudi Arabia has invested billions of dollars transforming the vast desert along the Saudi-Yemeni border into large irrigated agricultural fields that use Tigrayan farm laborers to grow wheat, dates, fruits and vegetables.
The pay is not worth the risk the Tigrayans are taking crossing the Red Sea to Yemen, or landing in the hands of cruel human smugglers in the inhospitable Yemeni desert, but they have no other choice to find jobs since they're no longer welcome in other parts of Ethiopia, and the bridge they burned behind them no longer exists to take them back to Eritrea's farm lands that once upon a time sustained their livelihood.
