Eritrea and Oman Discuss Red Sea Cooperation

(EP) - Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki met with Oman's Foreign Minister, Mr. Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, in Asmara today.

The Foreign Minister conveyed a message from His Majesty Haitham bin Tariq, the Sultan of Oman, regarding the enhancement of “bilateral ties” and discussions on regional and international issues of “shared interest.”

President Isaias emphasized that the historic and enduring relationship between Eritrea and Oman naturally supports the advancement of “mutual interests.” He noted that these warm ties could be “further strengthened by fostering common perspectives and visions on regional and international matters.”

In a brief statement to the Eritrean News Agency, the Omani Foreign Minister highlighted the sustained cooperation and joint programs between Eritrea and Oman, aimed at “ensuring the security and stability of the region, particularly in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf.”

It appears that the Yemeni side of the Red Sea is no longer safe for international shipping, as more and more ships are being targeted by the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Most ships are now sailing along the Eritrean side of the Red Sea for their safety, which in turn has elevated Eritrea's strategic importance along the vital chokepoint of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

It is not surprising to see many countries are now seeking strategic partnership with Eritrea. That's how the world works.

For example, if Tigray was located along the Red Sea, the agame Mesob would be very busy receiving foreign diplomats seeking strategic partnership with Tigray that he would be forced to take some time off from his Mereja Forum activities. But lucky for him, Tigray is not a Red Sea nation.
