Rodrigo Roa Duterte, the former President of the Philippines, hails from the Bisaya ethnic majority group in a country that is historically dominated by the Tagalog ethnic minority group.
Duterte's China-friendly policy during his term caused him a lot of enemies from within the country and abroad. His political opponents and their Western backers used Duterte's unpopular "war on drugs" policy that killed a lot of innocent people to portray him as an "evil psychopath" who should be indicted by the ICC.
The current President "Bongbong" Marcos, the son of Philippines' former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, before he came to office made a deal with Duterte not to hand him over to the ICC in exchange for Duterte helping Marcos get the majority Bisayan votes. Duterte, seeking more assurances for his safety, asked Marcos to appoint his daughter Sara Duterte as vice president. Fine and dandy, right? WRONG!
Much like Ethiopia, the Philippines has a rich culture of betrayals and treason. President Marcos impeached his vice President Sara Duterte not long after Duterte helped him become president. Marcos then turned against Duterte and handed him over to the ICC to be prosecuted for his China-friendly policy, sorry for his crimes against humanity.
I'm always fascinated by the eerie similarities between Ethiopia and the Philippines.
