As a nation, we sealed our unholy union when ethnic federalism became the rule of the land, a wedge that divides people along ethnic lines, forcing them to pledge allegiance to their own ethnicity, as opposed to the nation. This is why it's not surprising to hear some individuals making such remarks that fuel existing conflicts and tensions between different ethnic groups, because we are all programmed to think along ethnic lines.
