Super Banda ሚኒልክ used the army that was already developed in the different regions of Ethiopia because King Yohannes allowed a federated Ethiopia in which each federal state was allowed to build its army such as King Teklehaimanot of Gojjam , King Minilik of Showa , King Michael of Wello .The Tigray army that was trained & organized by Emperor Yohannes was also reorganized & ready to effectively deploy itself. The intelligence unit that was organized by Alula was also able to manipulate the Italians in bringing them to the trap that was set against them. Emperor Haileselassie weakened the regional forces by trying to centrally control Ethiopia. Gojjam was not involved in the war , Tigray was divided & disorganized. Of course the use of tanks, aircraft & forbidden gas by Italy played the detrimental role for the Italians to get the upper hand.

Italy was a late comer to the scramble for Africa that was dominated by Great Britain and France, who did not want their arch enemy Italy acquire colonies in Africa, but also wanted to avoid a direct military conformation with Italy for fear that it could lead to WW1.

Great Britain and France came up with a plan to humiliate Italy by arming and sending 100,000 Abyssinian troops in a human wave formation to overwhelm the fewer than 15,000 Italian soldiers stationed in Adwa, Tigray. Although Abyssinia lost 73,000 of its soldiers, it ultimately won the war. It was a great embarrassment for Italy, but a big win for both Great Britain and France.

When 40 years later Mussolini vowed to avenge Italy's defeat by sending 200,000 Italian soldiers to invade Abyssinia, Great Britain and France decided not to come to Abyssinia's aid because they wanted to do the job themselves at a latter day that could end Italy's presence in the continent. It was during this time that Emperor Haile Selassie fled the country and lived in Britain in exile while waiting for the British colonial forces to liberate Ethiopia from Italian colonization. It was worth the wait. :P :P
