Is Dr. Abiy Ahmed Smart Amara or Stupid Oromo?

Is Dr. Abiy Ahmed Smart Amara or Stupid Oromo?

In Ethiopia’s politics of major conflict (pro-Amharanet vs pro-Oromummà), there is no gray area in between. Any politician in general and heads of the government in particular can only be either opponent or proponent of one bloc or the other. They either preserve the dominating Amarigna/Amaranet or promote the liberating Oromiffà/Oromuimmaà. Here, Oromummà is the symbol for all dominated national identities like Tegarunet, Somalummà, Guragenet, Sidamummà etc. When we reflect back how Dr. Abiy came to power riding on the back of Qérrô movement and what he did since then, we dare to ask: is he smart Amara (pro-Amaranet elite) or stupid Oromo (biological Oromo with mental Amara)? If he is the first, I really admire his cvnning approach in order to hijack that fantastic and huge Oromo movement to save Amaranet from losing its status quo of domination and to keep it in a very smart way. If he is the second, how pity that the Oromo repeatedly sabotaged ourselves due to such stupid Oromo elites, who hitherto sold past victories of our liberation movement. No question that biological Oromo elites have always been heads of government and heads of the state, but they all used to rever Amaranet, instead of giving due respect to Oromummà. But, Dr. Abiy’s move is the worst betrayal to the Oromo for he is very deceptive even to fool some Oromo nationalists, who have been in the OLF. Who ever thought that these pro-Abiy OLFites neglect Afàn Oromo and try to be eloquent in speaking Amarigna. None of them dared to even try what Ob. Bulchà Damaqsà did years ago – speaking Afàn Oromo in the parliament. I personally think that Dr. Abiy is a triple Hybrid (marital, biological and mental), who internally identifies himself as Amara than as Oromo and smartly saved the domination of Amaringa/Amaranet from the liberating promotion of Oromiffà/Oromummà and from freedom movement of all oppressed nations in Ethiopia.

Amara elites in particular and pro-Amaranet bloc in general started to salivate in order to take political power of Finfinné palace in the election of 2021. Thanks to Dr. Abiy, who betrayed the Oromo in general and Qeérrô in particular, the Oromummaà camp is losing the possible freedom after change for the third time (firstly 1974 and secondly 1992). After the 1974 revolution, Mengistu (an Oromo) dismantled the Oromummà camp led by Meison. During the 1991 change, Negàsô and his OPDO cooperated with Woyane and defeated the Oromummà camp. Now, after the third change, Abiy betrayed Oromummà camp and cracked down the genuine Oromo nationalists, so that Amara elites are coming back to attempt taking of power from him and his prosperitan Hybrid group. Actually, only fool Oromo can allow the [ deleted ] Amara elites to manipulate every thing with pretext of democracy, election and freedom. It is pity to see Oromo nationalists being devided into two blocs (anti-Abiy vs pro-Abiy), so that the mischiveous Amara elites are getting chance to divide and destroy the Oromummà camp.

Otherwise, I couldn’t still unterstand the logic behind the fighting between Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and the Ethiopian National Army (ENA) led by Dr. Abiy. I was speculating a sort of drama being played by the Oromo forces against Abyssinian oppressors. Now, it is fact that some OLF leaders are intimidated and imprisoned. If this is not part of the game I guessed, it is simply deadly mistake from OPP’s security agents. Despite certain weaknesses we observe in the OLF leadership, this vanguard liberation front is a holy symbol of bilisummà/freedom for the whole Oromo. Attacking leaders of this organization is tantamount to be against the Oromo cause and be servant of Abyssinian elites, i.e being part of the enemy camp. With this action, Dr. Abiy’s OPP, whom we considered as Oromo liberator now governing Ethiopia is converted to another version of the hitherto Abyssinian rulers in Finfinne palace. Now, Dr. Abiy’s OPP surely lost trust of most Oromo and it has only two options: 1. continue to be part of Oromo liberation movement and give up power to genuine Oromo forces; 2. converted to be part of the hitherto Abyssinian oppressors and go on sabotaging the Oromo struggle. I advise Dr. Abiy and bis party to choose the first option and be remembered in history as part of Oromo movement. Opting for the second way means being part and parcel of Oromo foes. That is why Dr.Abiy’s OPP attacking the OLF is a deadly mistake.

This short essay was presented as a clarification for Oromo foes, who were delighting by “perceiving” a division of the Oromo liberation vanguard into “three.” For their information, OLF has got, from the very beginning, only one goal of freedom, which also, at the same time, can be interpreted as three goals of post-freedom Oromian sovereignty, and it played with the three cards based on the objective reality it was in, that means according to the “here and now” of situations. Even though the only one objective is self-determination, the three interpretations of the vision are:

– independence within possible union of free nations,

– referendum on the issue: independence within union Vs. independence without union, and

– independence without such federal union.

OLF permanently advocated that it fights for independence of Oromia, for Oromos’ right to self-determination, and for union of nations in the region. It emphasized one of the three interpretations according to the condition of the time (Zeitgeist). Whenever the enemy became arrogant and started to sing about unconditional unity of the country with suppression of Oromo’s rights, it stressed an independence of Oromia from Abyssinian colonialism, of course undermining possible union. The logic behind this was, whenever there is suppression, there will be a move for separation. When reasonable politicians from different nations in the ountry started to recognize the God-given right of the great Oromo nation to self-determination, it opted to play the card of self-determination (decision per referendum either for ‘independence within union’ or ‘independence without union’. In the near past, the one structural OLF, which we believed to have, was divided into three, each of the factions just taking as goal one of the three interpretations:

– OLF1 of Galaasa seemed to make no compromise on independence and was open for union after securing such national freedom..

– OLF2 of Dawud has self-determination as its goal (being open for both ‘independence within union’ and ‘independence without union’ as far as Oromo people decide for one of the two).

– OLF3 of Leenco (ODF) seemed to have decided for independence within federal union of nations in the country so that it sympathized with and strived for an understanding from the reasonable “pro unity” Abesha forces.

Anyways, Merdo to the foes of Oromo liberation movement is that the one/three OLF(s) will never give up the struggle for right of the Oromo to self-determination till we become the determiners of our own destiny, be it within or without union.

Otherwise, let’s differentiate rhetoric from conviction! I do hear certain Oromo politicians talking about the “fact” that Oromo people do not want “secession”. I do consider talking about “the Oromo wanting independence or not” is wrong generalization. One thing we need to know as a fact is that almost all Oromo politicians (including those who do make the above mentioned rhetoric), deep in their hearts, believe in the right of Oromo nation to self-determination. This is a hallmark of the Oromo and aim of our mindset (spiritual organization) – the OLF. This mindset, the OLF, has got one objective, but also three routes and three rhetoric.

– OLF mindset in the rebel organizations had an explicit rhetoric of self-determination and it fights for this objective by all means,

– OLF mindset in the opposition organizations has got the rhetoric of struggling for liberation in Ethiopian context, but it covertly struggles for the same aim,

– OLF mindset in the ruling organization has the rhetoric, which says: “we have already achieved the liberation”, but yet it covertly pushes for similar goal.

So fellow Oromo, let’s allow the mindset move to the objective in all ways, despite the rhetoric of some Oromo in the opposition and in the ruling Oromo organizations. Let our foes know exactly, despite the different rhetoric, Oromo liberation movement can never be stopped till it achieves the goal. We need to motivate ourselves to do our rhetoric and practice in the liberation movement on the route each of us chooses to come to the objective. Long live OLF as a trinity (OLF with one aim, but with three methods)! We have to forget the rhetoric of Oromo politicians in the ruling party and in the opposition parties, who are doing their talks under the gunpoint of Biltsigina (they are just denying the right of Oromo people to self-determination at gunpoint) and let’s strive to our end goal, which is already determined by our mindset.

I am personally against any sort of dictatorial unity, and I am supporter of union of free peoples in the country based on free will. Any unity without Oromo’s public verdict will fail, take it only 1 year, about 10 years or as long as 100 years. That is why I did advocate for a lasting solution based on free will of all stakeholders, instead of the temporary unity as a wishy-washy solution. In the past Medrek have chosen unconditional-unity as a precondition for the alliance, but the unity they strive for will surely never last long, because it is not based on self-determination of peoples, but on predetermination by only few elites. The PAFD (Peoples’ Alliance for Freedm and Democracy), which was forged by the OLF et al was based on solid ground and took self-determination rather than unconditional unity as precondition for an alliance!

Anyways, our foes need to know that, they can only manipulate and delay the realization of Oromo’s right to self-determination, but they can never hinder it. Oromo’s mindset is leading us to our objective of self-determination, however long it may take. Our foes like it or not, in reality almost all the Oromo are led in our liberation struggle by this mindset. That is why the International Crisis Group (ICG) put it: “Despite its organizational flaws and divisions, many Oromos retain an almost messianic belief in the OLF as the major nationalist organization”! This beloved liberation front (mind set) of the Oromo, being active within the opposition movements like OFC and in the ruling party- OPP – already achieved 75% of its liberation goal. All Oromo in the walk of life welcomed the OLF leadership, not only physically as that of an organization, but more spiritually as part of our common mindset for Oromo’s freedom and Oromia’s sovereignty. Now, trying to discredit this front, which is in hearts and minds of millions of the Oromo is a futile exercise. I expect even from Dr. Abiy to salute OLA at Mesqel square thanking the freedom fighters for the sacrifice they paid in the last more than 50 years of liberation struggle for the Oromo. Again, thanks to Wàqa for the partial success we are enjoying and I would like to tell the “Shane-phobics”, chill out and move on!
