Azerbaijan Ships Detained in Eritrean Waters Were “Carrying Firearms to Ethiopia”

Post by Za-Ilmaknun » 10 Feb 2025, 12:32

In November 2024, the Eritrean government announced that it had seized three unauthorized ships in its territorial waters. The ships were reportedly from Azerbaijan.

Today, Ethiopian news sources reported that the ships were “carrying firearms and explosives for drones.”

Anchor Media, an Ethiopian news outlet based in the United States, reported that the intended destination was the coast of Djibouti. However, it remains unclear whether the ships originated directly from Azerbaijan or another location.

Last month, the Azerbaijani government stated that the ships were en route to the United Arab Emirates via the Suez Canal. They claimed that the vessels entered Eritrean waters due to adverse weather conditions.

Aze, an Azerbaijani news source, reported last month: “On November 7, 2024, the vessels CMS Pahlavan, CMS Igid, and CMS-3, operated by the Azerbaijani branch of Caspian Marine Services B.V. and flying the Azerbaijani state flag, were en route from the Suez Canal to Abu Dhabi (UAE). Due to deteriorating weather conditions, they were forced to enter the territorial waters of Eritrea.”

At the time of writing, the Eritrean government has not released a statement regarding the seizure of the ships’ cargo.

Notably, Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh, visited Azerbaijan in September 2024.

We're not going to let Abiy use drones to massacre Amhara and Oromo civilians. We are our brothers' keeper.

If the ship did not fish on Eritrean share of the Red Sea,
if it did not dump garbage or pollutants,
if it did not engage in military excercises,
it had not violated the "innocent" passage principle of the law of the seas.
When a ship enters within 22km from a coast of a country, for any reason, it is required to inform the country that has territorial rights over the 22km stretch of the sea.
The ship may not able to inform the country for multiple reasons such as storm or electronic problem. There must be a way to address it. May be a warning or fine or nothing at all.

Also, the contract may be that it was the responsibility of the seller of the weapons to deliver them.

The clown is safe, I think.

The Azerbaijani seller failed to deliver the goods paid thru an Emirate bank into Djibouti port. If the goods are really Ethiopian, then this could be used as a good pretext for Abiy Ahmed to take down Issaias by drone in his Adi Halo hideout or move to Assab.
