Awdal State’s Fight Against Abyssinia Aggression: Seeking Eritrea’s Solidarity

January 10, 2025

Dear Yours Excellency President Isaias Afwerki,

It is a great pleasure and privilege to write this letter to you from my heart, as well as from the hearts of the citizens of Awdal State of Somalia and the Somali people, to express our deepest gratitude for the unwavering support you and your government have extended to Somalia during times of need. Your kindness, compassion, and selfless dedication have left an indelible mark on our shared history and have strengthened the bonds between our two nations.

Yours Excellency, since the 1960s, the relationship between Eritrea and Somalia has been one of mutual support and understanding. During Eritrea’s liberation struggle, Somalia stood with the Eritrean people, offering moral, diplomatic, military, financial, and logistical support to the cause of independence. This was not merely a political act – it reflected the deep solidarity between our peoples, united by a shared aspiration for freedom, dignity, and sovereignty. When Somalia was a young republic, striving to establish itself as a stable and sovereign nation, Eritrea’s liberation movement looked to us as a partner and ally in the fight against oppression. Somalia’s support for Eritrean independence came from a genuine place of empathy and justice, understanding the value of self-determination and the pain of colonial and imperial domination.

Yours Excellency, in turn, Eritrea has shown remarkable generosity and solidarity with Somalia during some of our most challenging times. Your support, especially in providing training and assistance during Somalia’s efforts to rebuild its security forces, came without any expectation of conflict or personal gain. This selfless act stands as a testament to the deep respect and compassion Eritrea holds for the Somali people. At a time when Somalia faced instability and uncertainty, Eritrea stood by us, offering not just practical support but also a sense of hope and resilience. Your government’s refusal to exploit Somalia’s vulnerabilities and your willingness to help free of charge is a rare and admirable gesture in today’s world. It reminds us of the power of true friendship, built on mutual respect and the desire to see each other thrive.

Yours Excellency, it is with great respect, kindness, and compassion that I recall the pivotal moments when our paths crossed during the critical period of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF) in Mogadishu, Somalia when I was in Middle School. I am reminded of the immense dedication and solidarity extended by the Somali leadership, particularly through the initiative led by General Ahmed Sulayman Dafle (NSS) who was close friend and colleague to my late father. My father as Director of Cabinet Ministers, due to his unwavering commitment to the cause of Eritrean independence ensured that military, financial, logistical, and diplomatic support to the EPLF was made a top priority agenda of all Cabinet meetings during that period. Under his leadership, this initiative was swiftly approved and implemented by the Cabinet Ministers, reflecting the deep belief in justice and self-determination for the Eritrean people. It is a source of immense pride for me to share that my late father was among those who deeply believed in Eritrea’s right to independence and liberation. He carried with him the painful memories of witnessing the illegal annexation of Eritrea by the Abyssinian regime in 1962, a stark parallel to the earlier annexation of the Reserved Area and Ogaden in 1946. These experiences resonated deeply in his mind and fueled his conviction to support the Eritrean struggle.

Yours Excellency, the day Eritrea declared its independence on May 23, 1993, was one of the happiest days in my late father’s life. It was a moment of immense pride and joy, as he finally witnessed the realization of a dream he had supported with unwavering conviction and compassion. During his time as Director of Cabinet Ministers, he poured his heart into advocating for the Eritrean people’s cause, believing deeply in their right to self-determination and freedom. Although my late father had the privilege of serving as Director of Cabinet under esteemed leaders such as the late Prime Minister Abdirazak Hagi Hussein, the late Prime Minister Mohamed Ibrahim Egal, and the late President Mohamed Said Barre, it was the support he gave during the critical period of Eritrea’s journey to independence that truly defined his legacy. He brought courage, dedication, and a sense of justice to the table at a time when these qualities were most needed, helping to ensure that Eritrea’s aspirations were recognized and respected on the world stage.

Your Excellency, with great respect and admiration for your unwavering leadership and the resilience of the Eritrean people, I reach out to you on behalf of the Awdal State of Somalia and its proud citizens. It is a heartfelt call for solidarity, rooted in the deep and historic bonds that tie the Somali and Eritrean people’s together. The Awdal State of Somalia, a land rich in heritage and pride, is under threat from an aggressive Abyssinian regime that has sought to annex our coastal territory from Zeila to Ceel Sheikh – a stretch of land and sea spanning 100 miles that is vital to our identity, economy, and sovereignty. This aggression is not new; it is a continuation of ambitions dating back to 1884. Yet, despite these longstanding challenges, our people remain steadfast in their determination to defend their homeland. Regrettably, the Federal Government of Somalia has not only failed to protect our territory but has also refused to provide us with the necessary support to defend ourselves. When I approached the Minister of Interior with a plea for military assistance, we were met with indifference, being told to “buy your own weapons and, after you liberate yourselves, we will recognize your region as a state.” This response has left us with no choice but to seek support from those who understand the value of solidarity and the importance of defending sovereignty.

Your Excellency, in 2008, I had the privilege of visiting Eritrea twice, and I was profoundly moved by the warmth and kindness extended to me as a Somali citizen. The red-carpet treatment I received wherever I went made me feel not just welcomed but truly valued. It was a testament to the deep bonds and shared histories between our peoples. I felt that I was reaping the fruits of the seeds my late father had sown long ago through his commitment to Somali – Eritrean solidarity. That experience left an indelible mark on me, as it reflected the sincerity and unity that can exist between our nations when guided by principled leadership. At this time, I am prepared and honored to visit Eritrea again as a Member of the House of the People of the Federal Republic of Somalia (the Foreign Affairs Committee) and as a representative of Awdal State of Somalia to engage in meaningful discussions about the pressing challenges Awdal State of Somalia face.

Your Excellency, I wish to discuss the critical need for support for the citizens of Awdal State and all those across Somalia who are ready to defend our land and sea against the encroachment and aggression of the Abyssinian regime. The defense of our sovereignty and territorial integrity is not just a matter of survival but also a duty we owe to future generations, much as your people fought for and achieved their rightful independence. I will seek Eritrea’s assistance in providing military training for the Awdal State Darwish Forces, not to wage war but to defend our land and sea with dignity and peace. Our mission is not one of aggression but of protection, ensuring that our people can live in security and that our children can inherit a land free from fear.

Your Excellency, we are committed to resolving this crisis without bloodshed, but we cannot do so alone. Your leadership and Eritrea’s expertise in standing firm against external aggression are a source of inspiration for us. By supporting the Awdal State Darwish Forces, you would not only be helping us safeguard our territory but also honoring the spirit of mutual support that has defined the relationship between our peoples. We believe that your intervention would send a powerful message – that the principles of sovereignty and self-determination are worth defending, and that unity among nations in the Horn of Africa is the key to enduring peace and prosperity.

Your Excellency, you are a leader of principles who has stood firm against aggression and has dedicated your life to defending your nation and the dignity of your people. Your unwavering commitment to justice and sovereignty is an inspiration to many across the Horn of Africa and beyond. As someone who deeply understands the pain and suffering inflicted upon innocent people by the Abyssinian regime, your empathy for others enduring similar struggles is a beacon of hope for those who seek justice and liberation.
Your Excellency, unlike the self-serving international leaders such as Turkey Leadeship and AKP who dominate and others much of our geopolitical landscape, you have the rare ability to see beyond personal gain and focus on what is right and just. Awdal State needs a leader with your honesty, vision, and commitment to humanity. Your support would mean not only aiding people in need but also forging a lasting legacy of solidarity and partnership that will be remembered and celebrated by future generations.
Your Excellency, we hold great hope in your leadership and the goodwill of your government. We are counting on your brotherly solidarity to extend the military support that we so desperately need in these trying times. Such support would not only strengthen our bond but also serve as a testament to the enduring values of unity and mutual respect that have always defined our relationship.

Your Excellency, I would also like to share a deep personal note of gratitude. My late father was among those who supported your people’s courageous fight for liberation. His unwavering belief in Eritrea’s right to freedom and peace lives on in my heart. It is my sincere hope that the goodwill extended by my late father and so many others will be reciprocated in the form of your steadfast support for our nation’s cause.
Your Excellency, May Allah bless you abundantly for all the good deeds you have done for Somalia without hesitation or conflict of interest. Your principled and compassionate actions have left an indelible mark on our shared history, and we will always remember them with deep gratitude.

Please convey my heartfelt thanks to the citizens of Eritrea for their unwavering support and solidarity. May the bonds of brotherhood and mutual respect between our nations grow ever stronger, and May Allah guide us in our efforts to ensure peace, justice, and prosperity for all.
