Abiy was willing to sign a statement committing to Somalia’s independence and sovereignty, he resisted any mention of “territorial integrity” or “unity”.

The Somali delegation countered by referencing the 1933 Montevideo Convention, which codifies international legal norms and principles regarding statehood. One of its key criteria for statehood is the possession of a “defined territory”.

“You cannot say you recognize a country but deny that it has a defined territory,” argued the Somali delegation.

Turkish officials found this argument persuasive, concluding that Ethiopia must either recognize Somalia in its entirety under international law or not at all.

Egyptian politicians are saying that, both President Al SiSi and President Isaias Afewerki reached out to Turkey's President Erdogan asking him to force the 7th king in Ethiopia to accept their terms and conditions in regards to Somalia, or face the consequences of his childish behavior.

A future government in Ethiopia can make a case by claiming that Abiy Ahmed signed the Ankara treaty under duress in an attempt to invalidate the agreement entirely. Such has been the standard Ethiopian view point on signed agreements. Sad, but true.
