Russia will be a winner when the Kyiv administration is weakened to the point that it will sign away its eastern territories that are already occupied by Russians willingly to stop the war. Russia's goal all along has been to weaken Kyiv but alive.

The war is about Ukraine joining the NATO.Putin is not comfortable seeing NATO along his borders. Creamea has always been part of Russia before the Soviet Union came to reality. Ukraine was the most important region in the Soviet Union Empire. If UKraine stops the intent to join NATO, the war ends instantly. But then again, with his new found Russian power, Poland could be exposed. If Putin dares to do so, that would be the end of Russia if not the whole planet. Russia knows, while the Democrats are out of the White House, they have to end global conflict.

It is a proxy war, the US through NATO vs Russia.
Ukraine should never have allowed this to happen. They acted very very stupid. So is Europe. They would have built an economy empire if they were smart enough to stay neutral and build a good relationship with both powers. It all started in 2014. Ukraine will never be a viable state again because the Russians will not allow it.
The West did what it can and failed to prevail.

The West simply assumed that they are militarily superior to Russia and the sanctions will bring Russia to its knees.

Napoleon, Hitler, Kaiser, the British, Sweden etc at one point in history assumed the same way and failed. Napoleon and Hitler lost their empires. And some said this adventure by the US is the beginning of the end of the US empire.

The US doesn’t have a vital interests in Ukraine. Ultimately they will throw Ukraine under the bus and leave. While it is an existential threat for Russia, it is not for the US.
The US vital interest is in the indo-pacific/china.
Ukraine will break up into 3 parts. Both Poland and Hungary have a legitimate land claims in Ukraine and they will get it.

I think the conflict is centered around NATO's expansion towards Russia's borders. Putin decided to invaded Ukraine to stop NATO's expansion into Ukraine by installing a pro-Russia government in Kiev. He didn't invade Ukraine to damage Ukraine's grain production and push up global prices of wheat which stresses poorer economies worse.

Ukrainian politicians were split into two polarized positions: one section wants to join EU, NATO and get closer to Europe and the other section wants to remain closer to Russia. Putin decided to invade Kiev to topple the government that wanted to be closer to EU and replace them with a government that wants to remain closer to Russia and put an end to NATO's expansion towards Russia's border.

Putin's success should be assessed whether the invasion of Ukraine halted NATO expansion closer to Russian border or not. If the war has brought NATO to even closer proximity and concentration towards Russian borders, it is failure. If the war has halted NATO's expansion, it is a success. Did Russia became more encircled by NATO or less encircled by NATO as a result of the war? Does NATO's expansion to Sweden and Finland show that Putin's grave miscalculation?
