During the Cold War, when the Western Block realized that the Eritrean independence was inevitable and unstoppable, they rushed to find the best slave aid dollars can buy to replace the Derg communist regime in Ethiopia, and one that can help them to snatch Ethiopia back from the iron grips of the Soviet Union.
They knew that no one was more qualified than the TPLF to serve their interest, but at the same time, due to the nature of the Cold War the two world super powers didn't want to appear they were arming rebel groups that would threaten each others' sphere of influence, so the Western Block asked the TPLF to do whatever it takes to make the Derg regime look bad in the eyes of the international community, and the TPLF came up with the brilliant idea of creating an epic man-made famine in Tigray that would cause over one million deaths!!
Whatever it takes, was the name of the game, and the TPLF did not disappoint their masters either. In fact, they shocked the hell out of their masters by the number of death! That's when the Western Block knew that they have the best slaves in the TPLF, and in Tigray.
