The outcome of Eritrea being sing-poor has been felt over decades by Ethiopia. Currently, about 1 million Eritreans fled Eritrea and are living in Ethiopia. The problem is not only Eritrea being sing-poor, but also not wanting Ethiopia to become Singapore. Ethiopia has 100% chance of becoming Singapore as endowed with huge untapped potential, but (without biases) it is improbable for Eritrea to attain that.

In this new video below, TPLF's founder Gebru Asrat said the following, (rough translation)

"...in the early 90's when relations between TPLF and Eritrea were at all time high, I led a delegation that visited Eritrea to observe infrastructure projects that was focused on building dams, modern agriculture, roads, bridges, etc.

To much of our surprise, we saw Eritrea had transformed its military force into a massive civilian workforce undertaking the major infrastructure projects of such magnitude, which led us to believe that Eritreans, if left unchallenged, they could easily achieve their Singapore dream, and we found that unacceptable. We didn't want to live next door to a country whose people enjoy exceptionally high standard of living, and something had to be done, and done quick.

It was at that moment that we decided to prepare for war to derail Eritreans from their goals. Badme was a mere pretext we used to start the 1998-2000 conflict that we had hoped would stop the overly ambitious Eritreans in their tracks."
