I don’t think many Americans know that one of Putin’s conditions for ending the Ukraine war is NATO retreating back to its pre-1997 membership and abandoning Eastern Europe.
This would mean, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia — all the new members of NATO, who joined after the Soviet Union collapsed — would have to be kicked out of the alliance.
Putin’s conditions would likely also include the demand for Sweden and Finland to leave NATO.
Putin was threatening WW3 if Sweden was allowed to join NATO — yet nothing happened when it happened.
But it doesn’t mean that Putin is OK with Sweden and especially Finland in NATO.
He simply believes he has already 4 aces in his hand — the war in Ukraine that the West is scared to win.
Putin genuinely believes that the war in Ukraine damaged Europe more than it damaged Russia — that Europeans are so fed up with the war, they will demand from their leaders that the war must be stopped — no matter the cost.
Putin believes that he can create such a chaos (using his Iranian allies to sponsor pro-Palestine protests in Europe and America) that the European Union and the USA will collapse.
We know that Russia armed both Hezbollah and Hamas – the amount of the Russian weapons and equipment the IDF found in secret underground tunnels shocked even Netanyahu himself. We know that some of the militants participating in the attack on 10/7 spoke Russian. Western intelligence professionals said that Russia helped to plan the attack.
Putin, Iran and North Korea are united on one platform — they want to destroy America.
This is the core principle that makes them allies. Other than that, what could an atheistic communist dictator, fundamental islamists and Orthodox Christian KGB mafia have in common?
Putin believes he is a genius strategist who is skilled in playing 5-dimensional geopolitical chess. He believes that other world leaders are suckers who don’t understand that being honest is stupid.
That you can say absolutely anything to get what you want.
KGB trained its operatives to make any promises to get what they needed from people — and then swiftly execute the gullible [deleted] with no pity, once they got what they wanted, if he was no longer useful.
“I give you my word of an officer” — and then the bullet in the head. Normal KGB standards.
But even before the KGB school, Putin was trained by the local mafia boss (his judo trainer), who instilled the same ethics into him — “you are either ordering a meal, or you are on the menu”. You only keep loyalty to your gang and your family, others are food.
“I died, but mafia is immortal,” the inscription on the gravestone of Putin’s judo trainer Leonid Usvyatsov states. (Original photo in comments.)
By the way, it was Usvyatsov who told young Vova Putin to apply to the KGB. He needed his own guy there.
That’s why Putin had these great connections with the organized crime groups in St. Petersburg in 1990s — as a KGB curator, he was assigned to St. Petersburg liberal mayor Anatoly Sobchak. But he also had great connections with the local mafia, so he was able to unite the official power of the mayor’s office with the secret power given by the security forces, as well as utilize the mafia for dirty deeds like blackmail and murders.
Today, the whole Russian state is like this — the FSB appoints the local mafia bosses, to gather intel, dish out punishments and rough up dissidents. If a local mafia boss overdoses or dies in a car crash, the FSB pulls another high-rank criminal with local roots from prison (where he lives a good life, because of working with the FSB), to quickly put on the throne.
That’s what the ideology of “AYE” means — “prisoner thug unity”. Russia lives not by laws, but “by understandings” (“po ponyatiyam”).
“Understandings” (“ponyatiya”) — that’s the rules of the criminal world, taught to young Putin by his trainer Usvyatsov.
Putin’s mafia feels strong and they want more territory.
Putin only believes in “understandings” — “the thieves’ law”, not in actual laws. The thieves law is that the one who can get what he wants, wins, no matter how he got it.
All Putin’s closest associates — Patrushev, Bortnikov — live by the same “understandings”. They are murderers with no soul.
The Russian army that we saw in Ukraine isn’t special — that’s just Russians brought up on “understandings”.
Americans need to see Putin for what he is.
And they need to understand that for Putin’s mafia, they can be either enemies, suckers, or slaves. Putin will never see them as anything else than suckers or enemies. He just doesn’t have it in him.
