Toronto – a report by Global System for Mobile Communication Association ( GSMA) – which was published this week – says 76% of the population is still not using mobile internet. Corridor

The finding pointed out that the population with no access to mobile internet is living in areas that get mobile network coverage. The report says doing away with the gap is key for “Ethiopia’s digital future.”

GSMA, a global organization whose vision is “to unlock the full power of connectivity so that people, industry, and society thrive,” sees a potential for over ETB 1.3 trillion in the digital economy to increase to GDP by 2028. It also projected that over 50 million Ethiopians will have access to mobile internet by 2028.

In its latest report on “‘Digital Economy Ethiopia Report: Opportunities, policy reforms and the role of mobile” highlighted reforms in the telecom sector and investments in mobile technology. They “are catalysing growth in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and public services. These advancements are expected to create over 1 million new jobs and generate an additional ETB 57 billion in tax revenues by 2028,” it said.

Ethiopia’s Telecom sector was monopolized by Ethio Telecom until the government sold a telecom license to Safaricom which started operation in the country in 2022.

GSMA made five key recommendations which it says are crucial to ensure Ethiopia’s Digital Transformation. They are prioritizing service affordability, fast-track telecom reforms, improving device affordability, expanding mobile money services, and boosting digital skills and government services.

This is thanks to 27 year neanderthal rule of woyanne, who refused to liberalise the telecom sector and watched by as Kenya and even Somalia enjoy better Internet and smartphone penetration. Woyannes deserve their current sorry state.

The last time I checked, 72% of Ethiopians lived below the poverty line, and another 76% had no access to mobile communication. The 11% economic growth touted over the last 32 years has been misleading.

Starvin Marvin,
Your sh!thole country Ethiopia has 98,800,000 population living without a mobile phone while 93,6000,000 are living below the poverty line as we speak. You cannot go lower than the above shocking figures.

I am so pleased that I am not from this sh!thole nation.
