This is taken from the old text book. I was in Dire Dawa when TPLF burnt the Dire Dawa's big open market to the ground. The market is called "Taiwan". Dire Dawa was the third major city next to Addis and Asmara during the Derg time. Really beautiful city with lots of goods coming through Djibouti. With the departure of Asmara, Dire Dawa was the 2nd major city and TPLF needed to send Dire Dawa to irrelevancy to make Mekelle prominent and one of the thing they did was burn Taiwan to the ground. they also took the Dire Dawa textile factory to Mekelle. Once a tourist hub, Dire Dawa was gone. The merchants in Dire Dawa's taiwan were Somali, Amhara and Gurage. All dispersed or forced to leave the area.

PP is the brain child of TPLF hence, it is expected to do that. Who are the merchants in Merkato? overwhelmingly non-oromo. probably a lot of Gurage, Silte, Tegaru and Amhara.
