More than one billion people are living in acute poverty across the globe, a UN Development Program report said Thursday, with children accounting for over half of those affected.
"The 2024 MPI paints a sobering picture: 1.1 billion people endure multidimensional poverty, of which 455 million live in the shadow of conflict," said Yanchun Zhang, chief statistician at the UNDP.
India was the country with the largest number of people in extreme poverty, which impacts 234 million of its 1.4 billion population.
It was followed by Pakistan (93 million), Ethiopia (86 million), Nigeria (74 million) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (66 million). The five countries accounted for nearly half of the 1.1 billion poor people.

The United Nations Development Program report projects that poverty rate in war-torn landlocked futureless Ethiopia will increase from 72 percent to 100 percent by 2035.
That is if war-torn Ethiopia survives as a nation for the next 11 years.

Ethiopia will disintegrate. All political experts agree on that. The question is, how painful it is going to be. How would disintegration occur ? Is it going to be bloodless ? How would the end look like is anybody’s guess. Would Guragie join Oromia, Amhara or perhaps consolidated Southern Nationalities ? The answer is anybody’s guess.

Here you have it! The latest report of Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) just came out. Eritrea is not on the list. You know why? That is because it has no poverty at all. All its citizens earn income that puts them well above the poverty line. Its GDP is above Singapore and Monaco. These more than 250,000 refugees in camps in Ethiopia who claim to be from Eritrea are not true Eritreans. They are Tigres, Oromos and Amharas. Bravo Eritrea, bravo, bravo, bravo!!!!

Nurse who inspired Live Aid marks key milestone
Clara Bullock BBC News, Somerset

Dame Claire's work in Ethiopia inspired the Live Aid concert series.
A nurse is marking 40 years since the moment her work in Ethiopia became the inspiration for a worldwide musical fundraising drive.
Dame Claire Bertschinger, who lives in Crewkerne, Somerset, appeared in a BBC news report in 1985 while caring for starving children. It prompted musicians Bob Geldof, George Michael and Sting to record the charity single Do They Know It’s Christmas?.
The number one record was followed in 1985 by the Live Aid concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium and in the US, which raised more than £114m for famine relief.
But it was not until 20 years after the report first aired that Dame Claire realised the role she had played.
While working in Ethiopia, she was faced with "heartbreaking" choices, where she had to pick 70 children out of 1,000 and decide who would be offered food.
"It was a horrendous situation. People were starving, not just children. They were skin and bones," she said.

Dame Claire Bertschinger helped starving children in Ethiopia in the 1980s.
