I have noticed nowadays in this forum, Gurage has become the main topic.

My opinion on gurage....

I have great respect for the gurage society. They co-exist happily irrespective of faith. Of course, the overwhelming majority of Gurages are muslims and I love the names they apply... If you visit a gurage shop (kiosk) in addis, the name of the owner holds the name... Kedir... Muzemil... Mudesir... Awel.. etc.

Such names are old and they were applied during the reign of harun alrashid, the islamic amir almuminin in the 8th century but since then, it became obsolete. Have you ever heard of an eritrean whose name is kedir..?

Kedir is not only a Muslim name, it is also a Gurage word ግድር which means 'great' ትልቅ ፣ ታላቅ። In fact, there wan an Ezana era king of Axum called Negasi Geder. Presently, ግድር (ታላቅ) የሚለው ቃል ያለው በጉራጌኛ ውስጥ ብቻ ነው። የአረብኛ ቃሉ ከዲር ነው።

Islam in Gurage had not been brought in by Arabs. It was brought in by Gurage Islamic scholars who were sent Islamic learning centers and returned. These names therefore are names direct from the Qura'n. The Quranic Arabic is perhaps the most unadulterated Arabic, without the influences of the non-Arabic bedouins, who when they adopted islam, did not drop their non-Arabic traditional names. So, Gurage doesn't have non-Arabic names such as Aya, Thalia, Ghida or Ghada, Hala or Haya, Soha, Maha,Sima, Hiba. Amal. Amira, Rawan, Zayan, Randa, Fara, etc.

Average Gurages are lovely people. Really a model society very busy on economics, self improvement and business. Unique people. But their elites are something. I can only say the likes of Birhanu Nega, Horus Nega and their activists ...etc. though.

Kedir also spelt as Qadir(Qedir) translated to English means 'strength', 'power'. When in Arabic you say, "Ma indek qadir", it means you said to him, "You don't have strength or power". The Pagan is very very close.

Linguists have already established that Gurage language is the oldest of Ethio semitic languages, perhaps older than Geez because you find words that are not even in Geez but in Aramaic or Akhadian.
