The International Crisis Group (ICG) in its 2009 report on Ethiopia warned Ethiopia’s policy of Ethnic Federalism is potentially explosive. It cautioned, "it was ethnic federalism that destroyed both the former Yugoslavia and the former U.S.S.R." There you have it!
What role did ethnicity generally play among ordinary people in the former Yugoslavia? Was it really such an issue, or was it mainly triggered by the political elites who were pursuing different objectives?

Yugoslavia was constructed as a multi-ethnic state. It was not primarily the individual – the citizen – who was represented in the federal, or even the provincial institutions: it was the ethnic group. People were very much aware of their ethnic group. And ethnicity was extremely important if you wanted to build a career – even in academia. You could not solve any political problem without some kind of ‘ethnic justice’. There was a general feeling that your ethnic group would always be in a worse position than other ethnic groups. The people were all – and always – unhappy on account of this perceived ethnic injustice.

In 1989, 1990 and 1991, strange historical theories about the Yugoslav ethnic groups started to circulate. These basically invalidated the other ethnicities. There were theories that the Croats were not really Slavs, but an Iranian tribe; that, in fact, everybody in Yugoslavia was Serbian; that the Slovenes were not Slavs, but Venetians, and so on. Ethnic groups were redefined, basically for political reasons. This was not the main reason behind the dissolution of Yugoslavia, but it was one of the ways in which that dissolution was justified.

Egypt is unloading cargo ships carrying tanks, artillery, and heavy weapons in Somalia. It is also set to send 10,000 troops to Somalia before the year end.

What does this mean for the Somali people that have been fighting for Ogadeni independence for over 3 decades?

The well-documented crimes of genocide the agame had committed against the people of the Ogaden region during the last 27 years is still fresh in the minds of the victims who may be compelled to hold a UN supervised referendum to join their kin across the border, taking with them a vast territory rich in oil and natural gas reserves to create Greater Somalia.

Now the question becomes, can Ethiopia survive this?

I don't think Ethiopia can survive the 72-year running huge blunders that has plunged the country into ethnic conflicts stirring up ethnic nationalism across the ethnically divided country. It's a situation that can only be described as "every man for himself," or the survival of the angriest. :|

Following our long standing tradition of giving and culture of generosity, Eritrea will provide vital food aid to the affected people in Ethiopia.

It's very unfortunate that Ethiopia, despite the numerous opportunities it had to right the wrongs, it decided to follow the footsteps of the former Yugoslavia just because national identity has been overridden by ethnic identity, thanks largely to the Ethnic Federalism arrangement serving as a catalyst for the country's collapse and dissolution. Why is it so hard to find one sane leader among the 120 million people in the country? :|

I don't think we will survive this one. What the Tigray have started, Abiy is bringing it to completion. Even donor nations are showing fatigue that they no longer care about us.

We are doomed because we are led to believe that war is the only unifying factor, especially the unwarranted wars of expansion which, for example, has shrunk Tigray's geographical area to half its former size, and which on a national scale could have a far more devastating outcome, in a manner similar to the former Yugoslavia that has since disappeared from the face of the Earth. We are doomed!

A country whose sole existence is attributed to its destabilizing efforts and subverting activities can only be stopped by the same way it treats others, and only then will its people find peace.

Is the man also someone paid by one of the troubled entities of our region? Either EPLF or TPLF in this case?

He is a certain moron, deliberately propagating false rumors and gossips, when exposed also remaining silent instead of owning the false story, as someone with some title of Prof.

Shabos paid this guy, from their empty coffer, bad for them.
