Bea'lu did not mean to prejudice the Ethiopian character. Obviously, he is too a serious social scientist to engage in such general assumption. He felt though no other way of exposing the selfish character and viciousness of the DERG trigger-happy leader Mengistu Hailemariam. He hoped he would hide in generalization and achieve his goal. He hoped Mengistu would not pin him down to admit he was actually describing him. He wanted to mislead him at the same time convey his message to Ethiopians.
As a patriot, he really was saddened by the number of civilian and military leaders Mengistu executed only because they suggested new policies for his consideration.
They were not naives. They trusted him. Spoke to him new policies candidly. He betrayed their trust. They were not offered a redress, retract, more clarity. Were not brought to military martial court. He was singularly the martial court. He ordered them killed.
Ethiopians, in general, are kind people. If you are in trouble, they help you in their capacities tgey are able to.
If you are afraid of the gov of the day, they hide you under their bedrooms or storage shacks or on toilet rooms. When security knocks on their doors and answer it, they lie for your your protection.
When you travel and you need shelter for a day ot two, they host you in their homes to take a rest so that you journey fresh again.
Now, intelligent Eritrean refugees who deserve a protection and resettlement by Ethiopia to achieve their life goals with the help Ethiopians can provide them.
Take it. Its a better opportunity than rigid loyalty to a rotten dictator.
