Somalia emerged victorious in that conflict with remarkable decisiveness; the entire Ethiopian army was destroyed in a matter of mere weeks. It was only with the intervention of the Russians, who enlisted Cuban forces to combat the Somali advances, that the tide began to turn. Absent the involvement of foreign powers, the border between Somalia and Ethiopia might well have extended to the very outskirts of Addis Ababa indeed.
