Ethiopia: News - Tigray Interim Admin Sacks Four More High-Ranking Officials

Addis Abeba — In a letter sent from the president's office, the Tigray Interim Administration has removed four high-ranking officials from their positions. This decision came 10 days after the interim administration removed an additional six top zonal officials from their positions.

The latest termination letter was dated 28 October, 223, but was delivered to the officials this morning. It cites Alem Gebrewahid (communication adviser to the president), Amanuel Assefa (chief cabinet secretary), Teklay Gebremedhin (administrator of the Northwestern Zone), and Liya Kassa (administrator of the Southeastern Zone) as being dismissed from their positions.

TPLF is a broad church like the Republican Party, Labour Party, Conservatice party etc. It's members range from liberal market economy supporters to socialist planned economy advocates. They also range from Independent Tigray supporters to those who are committed to a close federalist relationship with Ethiopia.

It is normal for some sort of power struggle between different factions within a big party during Party Congress which usually makes changes in party leadership members. How big is the ideological division between TPLF's two factions? Or, it is just a clash of personalities?

It looks there was ant-TPLF mole within TPLF prior to the start of the war and that mole was growing until now and recently Getachew Reda( for his own reasons) has joined them. The bottom line is TPLF has been divided into two & who is to come out victorious will be known shortly. This is a natural evolutionary process , specially in the environment TPLF has been facing where non-elected & retired TPLF officials manipulate from behind and external forces trying to destabilize the party. The ONLY common denominator among TPLF members to keep the party 'one and alive' is TRIBAL thinking ( ዘረኝነት.) ህወሃትን ከፍተኛ ከኣመራሩ አንስቶ እስከ ተራ ደጋፊው ኣንድ ኣድርጎ አስተሳስሮ የሰፋው (የያዘው) የጎሳ ጅማት እንጂ የዓላማ (ideology) ክር አይደለም። ይህንን የምለው ደግሞ ዛሬ ሳይሆን ቀድሞም ጭምር ነው። Let me share you an excerpt from one of my articles in 2016:

Happy monday I think over 95% parties that existed and exist in Ethiopia are የብሔር parties or as you call them ዘረኛ parties. TPLF is only 1 of these 100s of parties that existed in Ethiopia over the past 60 years. These parties did not come out of nowhere and they don't exist in vacuum. They came out of the Ethiopian people and they exist supported and protected by the people. Parties in general reflect the people. Could we then conclude the Ethiopian people are ዘረኛ if we fallow your train of thought?

If there are 84 የጎሳ ቂጥኛም parties that does not mean ቂጥኝ is normal. All these 84 የጎሳ ቂጥኛም have to be quarantined and treated should not be allowed to infect the nation.

If we are talking in general term, Ethiopian ppl are not tribally jingoistic. However, it is true that these days a considerable number of citizens have been trapped in that way of thinking; and there is no one to be blamed for this except TPLF. Under TPLF regime, political parties were forced to take shape on the basis of ‘race’ or tribe. There was no other option than to follow that trend. Yet; even so, there were a number of political parties for or within one region / tribe differing one another based on ideologies. Take Amhara’s case as instance. Of course, 'ዓረና' came late at the crumble of TPLF dynasty in the country. In addition to this, it was and is still common to see an Amhara or a Guragie or someone from the south supporting or even being a member to a party organized and led by individuals from a different ethnic group. I am not saying that this was not visible in Tigaru. Unfortunately TPLF decimated those who had a taste and preference for a better governing policies over governing bodies.

Otherwise: in recruiting or requesting process to be a member of any political party, ‘race’ or tribe was not the necessary ingredient during DERG administration. It was normal to see an Amhara, Guragie, Tigrean, and so on in one political party that formulated itself based on a clearly defined social, political, and economic ideologies.

Three out of the 4 CC members Getachew sacked in November have made it to TPLF Politburo. But, Alem Gebrewahid, the one who was leading the feud with Getachew only became the 23rd member of CC.


Getachew Assefa (UMD Media) listed the members below. 2/3rd of the Politburo members are new.

The 14th Congress of the TPLF concluded with the election of the following 9 members to its Executive Committee (Politburo):

1. Dr. Debretstion Gebremichael - Chairman (continued)
2. Mr. Amaniel Assefa - Vice Chairman (new)
3. Mrs. Fetlewerq Gebre-Egziabher (continued)
4. Mrs. Liya Kassa (new)
5. Mr. Teklay Gebremedhin (new)
6. Dr. Fisseha Haftezion (new)
7. Dr. Abraham Tekesete (continued)
8. Dr. Redae Berhe (new)
9. Dr. Solomon Kidane (new)

The Politburo has been over the past year reduced to 5 membersas some members passed away, were demoted, or left the group. Notably, Alem Gebrewahid, a key figure in the TPLF secretariat, who was at the center of ongoing tensions with Getachew Reda, the only dissenting member of the outgoing Politburo, did not make it to the Politburo.
