An Intuitive Association of Orbital Forcing and Monsoon Rains

Post by Messele Zewdie Ejeta » 06 Aug 2024, 13:59

Starting at a young age, I have been wondering about Monsoon rains because of the nature of flooding they cause in Asia. Just recently, there was sad news of fatal landslides in India because of Monsoon rain.

Monsoon rains have been observed for the ages. Its current scientific explanation is that it is associated with annual latitudinal oscillation of the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

El Niño–Southern Oscillation is another natural phenomenon that affects weather on a global scale.

Studies have shown an association between tide wave amplitudes and the phases of the Moon.

The effect of orbital forcing on these natural phenomena is yet to be fully understood. I consider an effort toward understanding it a new frontier of research.

Intuitively, I have been thinking that because of the nature of their intensities and frequency, studying Monsoon events might suggest a strong signal for orbital forcing.

I have wanted to look into it as part of a newly uncovered association of orbital forcing and meteorological variability. A peer reviewed paper about it at the following link was published several years ago:

Validation of predicted meteorological drought in California using analogous orbital geometries.

This paper was part of an effort to attribute climate change to natural variability and elevated greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

For interested researchers who have the resources and time to do it, I think that it is a worthwhile research endeavor.
