Menge was (as a leader) a fierce nationalist, there is no doubt so far about that, but he was also very much emotional and guided by his own sort of emotions and shortsightedness. He was not a strategist, that was why he lost the game somehow too early.
The competition is in the field is too fierce, if you make a slight and single wrong move, then you can lose the whole battle sooner than later.
We have a strategist in the seat for now, Menge had the full 17 years of time and the current leader didn't yet have even 7 years in the position. To make the comparison somewhat fair, we have to give them both the same time and assess their achievements and failures based on that.
