The main reason why Meles wanted Eritrea to be independent was to kill Isayas secret desire to be the PM of Ethiopua. He knew majority of the TPLF rank and file would have voted for him.
Meles had to ask the UN to hold a referendum for Eritrea independence so that he would be the PM of Ethiopia.
