ማል አናን ጄዹ፣ ይሉኝታ፣ What would they say about me on a $32.8M salary

ማል አናን ጄዹ literally means what would they say about me.

ይሉኝታ is conceptually the same.

Both expressions are ingrained in our culture and teach self discipline starting at a very young age.

We all can remember how many times we heard these simple but profound expressions used by adults after they observe the youth or others make condemnable mistakes.

It teaches that the observed mistake not be repeated.

I hope most who know about these cultural assets have a common understanding and substantive explanations about them.

The simple question that comes to mind is if you are deeply conscious about these cultural assets, which of the following two would come to mind first if you were offered a $32.8 million salary: ማል አናን ጄዹ or ይሉኝታ and declining it at a moment’s notice or accepting it with excitement?

I don’t know about how many people reacted by asking if he knew ማል አናን ጄዹ or ይሉኝታ after hearing the news that the current CEO of Boeing gets a salary of $32.8 million.

The moment I heard about it in the news, I remembered them quickly.

It made me think if he thought about all the students he sat with in all the classrooms from presumably kindergarten to his last class before his final graduation from his last school and how much his academic performance stood out from all his classmates in his entire journey of education. Did his performance among all of them stand out as much as his salary stands out by so much?

How much marginal benefits does his management skills bring to the company compared to the potential that his peers could to the same company?

The next question that came to my mind is if a concept of educational equity or party has ever been established by lawmakers anywhere in the world. This would be establishing a range of wages for the same level of educational training and practical experience and capping anyone’s wage by any company at the highest level of the range. This would be fair, right?

If so, is it better for lawmakers to establish fair rules and regulations or blame those that lack self discipline in the absence of such rules and regulations?

I continue to think that the ideas at the center of these simple but profound expressions are deep. They may be among the parameters that define what it means to be civil and hence what define civilization.

This is the result of NEO-LIBERAL Capitalism which is spreading around the world.

Corporations will have a monopoly on all products.
The rich get richer and the poor will always stay poor.

My friend, everything is relative, so in this case, what made us say 'ማል አናን ጄዹ፣ ይሉኝታ'? Relative to the total capital and assets of $165 billion, a $32 million payment for this lucky guy is almost nothing. When the shareholders decided to pay him $32 million, it was a vote of confidence that he would, in return, bring a windfall of billions of dollars. 'What have you done for me lately?' is the rule of the game in the dog-eat-dog world of capitalism.
