During 2008, Al-Shabaab started taking control of significant tracts of southern Somalia and began governing territory for the first time. The Ethiopian military occupation faltered, and by Autumn 2008, more than 80% of the territory the Islamic Courts Union lost during the invasion was recaptured by by Al Shabab.

See, the whole Ethiopian army couldn't defeat a ragtag militia with AK-47.

BTW, Ethiopia didn't have anything to do whatsoever with the toxic dumping in the Somali waters.
