Dear President Harvard University,
We, the undersigned, are writing to express our deep concern regarding the appointment of Mr. Lea Tadesse to lead the leadership program at Harvard University. We believe that this decision is not in line with the values and principles of our esteemed institution, as well as the broader moral and ethical standards upheld by society.
It has come to our attention that Mr. Lea' Tadesse‘s involvement in the Ethiopian government as a health minister over the past five years has been marred by significant human rights abuses and atrocities. Specifically, under Mr. Lea's tenure, millions of innocent people, primarily from ethnic Tigray and Amhara communities, have lost their lives due to the devastating war waged by the government.
In light of these egregious actions, we firmly believe that Mrs. Lea does not deserve to hold such a prestigious position at Harvard University or receive any form of acknowledgment or endorsement. Allowing individuals with a history of supporting dictatorship and perpetrating violence against their own people to occupy positions of influence and leadership sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the values of justice, integrity, and human rights that Harvard University stands for.
Furthermore, by associating with individuals like Mrs. Lea, Harvard University risks sending a false message to dictators around the world that they can continue to live luxurious lives in the West without facing any consequences for their heinous deeds. This not only tarnishes the reputation of our institution but also undermines our commitment to promoting democracy, accountability, and social justice on a global scale.
Therefore, we respectfully urge Harvard University to reconsider its decision to appoint Mrs. Lea to lead the leadership program and to take immediate steps to distance itself from her. We call upon the university to issue an official statement denouncing Mrs. Lea's actions and reaffirming its commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethical leadership and human rights.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We trust that Harvard University will take the necessary actions to rectify this situation and uphold the principles of justice and accountability that are essential to our shared humanity.
Sincerely,
