In 1894, Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia signed a pact with France to lease the area of Djibouti for 99 years, however Djibouti to this day continues to serve as Ethiopia's trading outlet and close ties remain between the 2 countries. By 1896, Djibouti was fully integrated as a colony of France.
