Thanks Horus for sharing tigrayit songs. My hat off to you.
I would like to comment on above particular song.
The singer wed gash is depicting with his song the sad condition of eri girls in lowland eritrea and notably in countryside (thanks god not in towns).
As per the lyrics of his song, he and the good looking girl love each other, as such, he approaches her family telling them that they love each other and he wants to marry her.
The family of the girl are shocked and they say to him how dare!!! We will choose the right person for her. You stay out and don't show us your face.
At the end of the clip, you can see how the poor girl is morally down and she is about to cry because her family spoiled her future.
A question to you Mr. Horus,
Do you experience such type of inhuman handling of helpless girls as well among the Gurage society of course I mean in countryside?

Yes, I understood the core message of the song from the reactions of her father. I believe it was the same with us a long time ago but they changed the custom at the general congress called 'sera'. Now we have the annual 'Adabina' at Mesqel time where both boys and girls freely meet at a celebration and choose each other. Then if the two love each other and choose to get married, the boy tells his parents about it. In the old days I imagine some parents of the boy could have said no for class or ethnic reasons. This was also changed by the Sera system. So now the boy simply tells his parents abut the girl and then his parents send 3 elder ሽማግሎች to girls parents asking for marriage. The girls parents never say no or refuse to be related to the boys family. It is considered massive disrespect to the boys family. Then the date for engagement (ቸግ) is decided. So, yes in feudal Ethiopia the above Tigre story was common.kerenite wrote: ↑05 Feb 2024, 15:30Thanks Horus for sharing tigrayit songs. My hat off to you.
