Budget airline flynas begins direct flights to Mumbai, Asmara from Jeddah



RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s budget airline flynas has launched two new routes from Jeddah to India and Eritrea as the Kingdom’s aviation industry continues to expand.

The flight to Mumbai started on Jan. 15 and operations to Asmara began on Jan. 17. There are two weekly direct journeys scheduled for each destination.

The move comes as part of the National Civil Aviation Strategy to enable national air carriers to connect the Kingdom with 250 international destinations and to accommodate 330 million passengers annually by 2030.

So, is this mean that Ethiopia airlines is out as serving Eritrea? I read somewhere that JUJU-Air that belongs to South Koria will start service to Asmara from Dubay. I don't think considering the population of Eritrea needs three criers.

I don't think Eritrea is going to take Ethiopian Airlines off its market. But it's going to diversify the air operators serving Eritrea and certainly reducing its dependency on Ethiopian Airlines. And I congratulate Eritrea for taking this long-overdue step.

I do not believe the Eritrean government is going to ask EAL to stop servicing Eritrea. But, if for whatever reason the Abiy regime decides to stop the service, it won't be the end of the world. Although I have never flown Ethiopian, people (mostly Eritrean) have been complaining about its service, and some EAL employees demanding foreign currency from Eritrean passengers transiting through Bole International Airport.

I can vouch for the abuse the Eritreans they endured during my last trip to Ethiopia in November. One Eritrean woman was crying because the luggage workers stole two iPhones from her luggage. If i can witness that, imagine what happens in everyday bases. Anyway, does Eritrea benefit from Ethiopian airlines serving Eritrea? I don't know how it works.

The question is not financial, as air operators are operating on a market with strong competitive forces and huge profitability challenges and thus no particular operators have any comparative advantages, leave alone absolute advantages. It's rather opening it's market further to air operators, which helps promoting both the country and its airports further and also providing Eritrea's inbound and outbound passengers with choice, which in turn could reflect upon the number of visitors in Eritrea in the long run.
