As an Eritrean, I can assure what they say and do is different: what they said, what their parents tell them to do. Even Ethiopian and Somali parents do not prefer their children to marry African Americans, unless he is rich and famous. This may do with cultural bias and the wrong perception towards the poor and marginalized blacks.
The fact is many young Eritrean girls in Eritrea, as well as in Ethiopia to some extent, prefer to marry foreigners, because it is the easier way to escape more poverty, leave the country and the long repressive military service.
In diaspora, many young Eritreans and Ethiopians are dating each other and marry anyone for love.
If Eritreans are paying about $5,000 to escape to Ethiopia, then they will marry anyone white with a foreign passport to escape Eritrea at little financial cost. Poverty and political repression can make you do and say a lot.

The most important thing to make a note here is how Askari Skunni families raise their children. The girls in my opinion are innocent, grew up in Uganda.
They exposed the backwardness of their parents when they say "Our parents don't want us to date Ethiopians, they prefer us to date and get married with Africans than Ethiopians"
Back in the days when I wasn't that familiar with Eritreans and how they think, a Tigrayan man who lived in Eritrea told me this story and I kind of brushed it aside not believing him. To be honest ascari Skunnis are unique in this planet where they don't like you inside but can eat, drink and befriend you. As a person who believes an eye for an eye, Ethiopians need to educate their children about this since ethiokids easily embrace them without prejudice.

I was exposing the damages they incurred from their colonial masters that they are still suffering from, which is why we see them still showing strong hate and jealousy towards the free Ethiopians.
But like you said it goes back to their parents. They are still teaching them to hate. I would think they would have changed by now due to the horrific tragedies they went through for over 3 decades after the so called indepence. But it seems they did not learn!
I guarantee you most Ethiopians of today do not trust an ascari, regardless, and would advice their kids to be careful with those animals. I say it like it is!
