Here are some of the comments written in response to the Washington article:
Eritrea: the African Gulag

As a former Navy officer who served in Asmara in the early 70's at our base there (Tract B referred to in the article was part of that base) it is heartbreaking to see what their government has become. The Eritreans (then part of Ethiopia) are a proud, gentle and intelligent people who deserve far better than the murderous treatment they have gotten since Independence.
The Eritrean government should be publicly scorned by all governments and condemned by the UN for the atrocities they are committing. Their government's hand are covered with blood.

Sorry for those guys forcefully conscripted and put in prison for no reasons, but why nobody is taking up arms and start fighting this degenerated government? Instead of runing away and telling us again, again and again about their miserable life, why don't they stand up and fight for their freedom.
Internet tough guy here would probably easily defeat the whole military by himself.
Sure. Why don’t the Russian people, or the Chinese? Think it through.

The article states that the government gets money from giving China mining rights. And Russia is an ally.
Is this country completely sanctioned? It really shows the deep callousness of Russia and China support that blocks any attempt to scorn and overthrow this despicable regime, a nasty despot even higher the Kim in North Korea. Russia has only the meager scraps of friends left, all countries where the people generally despise their leaders. Great reporting. Little comes out this country in terms of news.

Good article
I talked with a student at our local college, whose escape from Eritrea was miraculous. He and his wife, both journalists, were put into those underground containers. I hope his wife was able to also leave that hell-hole.

What a surprise: a African country that has never had "a national election, a constitution or a transfer of power" Color me shocked. Granted, many other countries that won their independence far before have had national elections (cough cough), but their constitutions are often a joke ("Hey! We're amending the constitution so our dear ruler can serve another ten year term!!") and transfers of power....ummm. That can make Jan 6 look like child's play.

Cut the crap.

The worst gulag is famine, and that's what Ethiopia is known for.
