Can the The Law of Unintended Consequences apply here as well?

Eritrea supported Russian irredentism in Crimea & set precedent to Ethiopian irredentism for Assab. Precedents are law!

You cannot support Russian irredentism in Crimea and reject Ethiopian irredentism in regards to Assab Port!

Not sure why the Eritreans backed the Russians when the Russians are clearly the agressors in this war against Ukraine ,

Dr Zackovich
If its foreign policy were guided by respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, Eritrea would not support Russia. Eritrea supported Russia because Isiaias' government is guided by the kick they get out of annoying Western diplomats and the short-termist "My enemy's Enemy is My Friend". Eritrea's foreign policy is not guided by long term national interests and solid principles. They don't care what precedent they are setting by supporting Russian irredentism and future effects on Ethiopian irredentism in regards Asab.

You cannot support Russian irredentism in Crimea and reject Ethiopian irredentism in Asab! The principle is the same. Eritrean Foreign minister was the first diplomat to visit to Crimea when the entire world opposed the annexation.

[irredentism (noun) a policy of advocating the restoration to a country of any territory formerly belonging to it.]

Ukraine Condemns Eritrea for visiting Crimea

Yesterday, Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press statement protesting the visit of senior Eritrean officials to Crimea which came at the invitation of the Russian Federation. The statement said:

MFA expresses its strong protest to Eritrean side over not approved by Ukraine visit on June 5-6, 2014 of Minister for Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea Osman Mohammed Saleh to the temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

Ukraine considers that visit as an unfriendly step, blatant disregard of international law by Eritrean side as well as a flagrant violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and domestic law, of the UN Charter and the UN General Assembly resolution "Territorial integrity of Ukraine" adopted on March 27, 2014, that may have deeply negative effect on further development of Ukrainian - Eritrean relations.

We call on the Eritrean side to respect strictly the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and to comply with the international law.

According to the Ethiopian constitution that was drafted by the Tigray, the Ethnic Federalism arrangement in the country grants regional states the right to make deals with other countries as they may deem fit. The region of Benishangul-Gumuz is within her sovereign rights to lease 20 kilometers of its territories to Egypt, a country of 110 million people that must never be denied access to its sole water supply. :P

I don't think Abiy had thought about the consequences of his actions, which is a sign of immaturity and incompetence.

The sad thing is that, this could very well happen to us and there won't be anyone to condemn it, because people generally love to see you get a taste of your own medicine. :|
