23rd Anniversary of Ethiopia-Eritrea Algiers Agreement Celebrated By USA, EU and UK

Post by sesame » 12 Dec 2023, 11:56

On December 12, 2000, Eritrea and Ethiopia signed the Algiers Agreement which established a border commission to decide a "final and binding" delimitation and demarcation of the border. Today, the USA and European Union, guarantors of the agreement and god-fathers of EPRDF and PP, have issued statements telling Abiyot Ahmed to implement the agreement. They are not doing this because of concern about Eritrea but because they are aware of what happens to those who mess with Eritrea!
Department of State

Twenty-three years ago today, Ethiopia and Eritrea, with the support of the international community, concluded the Algiers Agreement and committed to demarcate a common border. In 2018, in a historic peace agreement, both countries recommitted to respect the borders as established. On this anniversary, it is more important than ever that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries be respected. The United States reiterates our support for the Algiers Agreement and encourages Ethiopia and Eritrea to work together, in the spirit of the peace they forged, toward a more stable and prosperous region.

This is very interesting. Do Eritrea and Ethiopia celebrating this day too? At least I expect Eritrea to do so. Wondering why the EU, UK, USA out of no where feels as if they are Eritrean and Ethiopian?

They were witnesses to and guarantors of the agreement! It is their legal duty to see that it is implemented. They also provide 50% of Ethiopia's annual budget.

To be honest, I do not think being "witnesses" entitle them to celebrates anniversaries as if they were the parties - they are not inherently the owners of Eritrea and Ethiopia. The question is where is the sovereignty of Eritrea and Ethiopia, if they do not own it but are commandeered

This’s a message to respect each other’s sovereignty… Mr telalaki Abyss needs to understand this or his sponsors will not be happy

I do not think this is to serve as a reminder, especially if they did celebrate this event do in all the prior years. It could mean different, especially in a time where Eritrea already secured Badame and other areas.

They celebrate it because it was an agreement that ended a deadly war. Why it upsets you is a mystery to me. As guarantors of the deal, it is their legal and moral duty to remember the date and tell Ethiopia to respect Eritrea's sovereignty. Abiy is certainly not celebrating because he has decided to back-stab Eritrea. By celebrating it, his master's are telling him to behave.

Please note, nothing upsets me. Happy Ethio-Eritrea Agreement Anniversary! I was just curious about the existence of such practice, especially when these entities regarded as "guarantors" were absent prior 2018 and be forceful ; and now, all of a sudden after Eritrea took control of the disputed territories they come out to celebrate. Is the UN doing the same?
