One of the main opponents of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopian political, has applied for political asylum in the United States, he told on Monday, denouncing the deteriorating political situation in Ethiopia and saying he feared for his life.
Bekele said that he had resigned from his post as vice-president of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), the main opposition party.
In the United States, where he has been since June 2022, "I realised that the political situation in Ethiopia was constantly deteriorating" with "intimidation, mass murders and arrests", he explained.
"The political context is not conducive to the peaceful struggle to which the OFC aspires. It is not possible to meet the people, so I felt I had no role to play."
