PhD as a Doctor of Philosophy is still in place, but the PhD that the clown in question has got is more of a health condition rather than academic - Permanent Hearing Disorder.

Historically, the term philosophy was used to mean science. In fact, physics itself used to be called philosophy. Hence, doctor of philosophy means the highest level of scientific knowledge or expertise in a given field. A person has to be a certified highest expert in a subject matter to be a PHD in something. This notion of PHD has essentially died in Ethiopia.
And, an honorary doctor of philosophy is conferred upon a person who has acquired the same or higher level of expertise in a field through formal training and/or through life time experience and contribution to that field. Now, let's asked? What is Zinash an expert of? On the other hand GiGi is a poet. But is she an expert level poet? I was not even comfortable when Gonder university conferred the same upon Tedy Afro. Hence, the very notion of honorary degree has also died.

Horus,
I find two things very unthoughtful here.
One, in which I disagree with you, in my understanding, Ph.D., a degree like B.S./B.A. and M.S./M.A., is a piece of paper, a certificate, a professional license for having demonstrated something for a specific purpose.
The purpose is toward becoming a Professor, to profess a body of knowledge. It is given for having demonstrated the ability to do research independently. The judges are accomplished professors at accredited institutions of education.
Passing the ability to do research independently is only the beginning toward becoming a Professor. You start as an Assistant Professor and have to produce a body of scientific knowledge before you become an Associate Professor and then more to become a Professor.
So, when single individuals like you state that the notion of Ph.D. has essentially died in Ethiopia, you are single-handedly disqualifying many many Professors around the world who were the professional judges to pass Ethiopians and others that went to various universities around the world to earn the paper, the certificate.
A simple analogy is that a student takes a math course, aces it, his professor reviews and records it for the student, and you claim from a distance that the student didn’t ace it.
Of course, as an independent observer, you can have, usually a biased opinion, that a Ph. D. from Harvard University is not the same as one from Asossa University. The great scientists like Newton and Einstein didn’t get their certificates to pursue science from Harvard.
የዓጼ ሀይለስላሴ የማስተመር ስንቅ ኣልሟጠጠም ብዬ ሳስብ እዚህም እዛም እንዲህ ታደርጉ?
The second one, in which I agree with you, the idea of giving honorary Ph.D. certificates to otherwise honorable people in Ethiopia starting in recent years. From those I heard, only that of the late Ali Bira made sense for his ባይጵን ጄቸ ኬ song, if he actually made that observation himself and sang it. It means የቃላትሽ ብዛት። I have posted on this forum my observation that relate to his observation. Both can lead to further research and professorship.
Teddy is a great art. However, artistic expressions and demonstrating the ability to do independent research are two different things.
Universities in Ethiopia can start their own local honorary letters. Shortly after I started school and started reading, I stumbled upon an exercise book with a beautiful note with a beautiful handwriting in a family box. The note had ranks for local education from what I remember ካህን to ሊቀልቃዉንት። ሊቀልቃዉንት was the highest achievement in learning.
So many years later, I have started to wonder if ክህነሊቅ is the root word for the English word knowledge.
If so, what would be wrong if Ethiopian Universities start honorary letters or certificates using local knowledge. I wouldn’t second guess at all if Teddy Afro becomes an honorary ልሂቅ ቴዎድሮስ ካሳጉን።

Ato horus,
Your whole life and daily practices are based on utter lies and spreading fake news. Otherwise the truth is that you have been praising and daily celebrating Teddy non stop just for milking his money and living better than Teddy himself until Teddy became conscious and cut easy financial sources from swindlers like you.
How dare you enjoy eating from Teddy's table and turn against him when you can't reach his table any more. When are you going to be yourself and cut your trousers according to your real size?

A simple analogy came to mind to explain one point even more easily. I am adding it here for the younger Ethiopian generation who may get a chance to read this discussion to be encouraged to pursue academy passionately.
There is another professional license called P.E. here in the U.S. It is a certificate of license given to professional Engineers.
It has a narrower path to get because it is generally engineers who can qualify to take the exam to pass it. The exam is administered by an accredited institution.
Once you pass it, you are a certified P.E. for life, which is my point here. It doesn’t mean you have designed some Engineering projects to show for it. It only means that you are officially qualified to do so.
It is renewed periodically for a small fee like you renew your driver’s license. Another additional point to make here is that I have never heard of an honorary P.E. that was given to anyone.
P.E. is basically an official acknowledgement that you are qualified in the practice of Engineering.
One of the things I admire about the Ethiopian education I knew is how rigorous its Civil Engineering education was when I attended college. I also admire the conceptual nature in its ESLCE.
In my view, Ethiopian students that graduated from its Engineering colleges can easily pass the exam and become P.E.s if they make reasonable preparations for it.
For some reason, the certifying institution doesn’t provide your score in the exam. It reports only Pass or Fail. So, to this day, I wonder about my personal score in the Engineering exam.
Also to this day, I remain surprised about a simple question that an American colleague who also took the exam asked me about how to solve a particular question in that exam. It was about designing a foundation with a factor of safety of 2. A factor of safety of 2 means if you design your foundation to carry a load of 100,000 lbs, you make it able to carry twice the load, or 200,000 lbs, even though it is expected to carry just 100,000 lbs. That makes the foundation safer.
It was one of the simplest questions in the exam. The American colleague, who was a graduate of one of the highly ranked Universities in the U.S., didn’t know about the concept of factor of safety.
Once I told him about it, he quickly understood it and quickly went back to his cubicle.
I am mentioning about this encounter here to illustrate how some things are easy in simple steps. This should encourage young and upcoming Ethiopian students in their academic and scientific endeavors.
I have briefly taught in both Ethiopia and here in the U.S. Two of the brightest students among those I taught in Ethiopia have gone on to earn their Ph.D. degrees here in the U.S., one of them from an Ivy League school. I met the other one, the only student I have ever given an A+ if I remember correctly, at a professional conference here in the U.S. I also remember one very bright student among those that I taught here in the U.S. I wonder now about how far his academic endeavor has come so far.
Both of these Ethiopian students are but two examples of how they can succeed in their academic endeavors.

I have no wish to engage in a pedantic debate on the purpose of a doctoral training in a given field of study. It is true one needs to have gone through a doctoral training to follow the a professorship career, but every PHD does not have to become a professor. The ability to do independent research is yes one of the core requirements to become a doctor of philosophy in that field. You show that skill through dissertation research by hopefully proposing an original question and hopefully adding something new to the body of knowledge in that particular discipline. If not a new discovery, at least you have to know just about everything that has been done surrounding your dissertation question. That is what makes you an expert on that question. That is all. I have family members who have gone into business the day after their dissertation defense.
But the issue in Ethiopia is not about these kinds of description on the nature of a PhD degree. Ethiopia does not have a research university that is capable of providing a doctoral training to a capable person let alone conferring honorary phds upon political and ethnic friends!!!It is a disgrace that facts have established that Abiy faked through a doctoral certificate and he allows his wife who is not known for any significant undergraduate education be given a doctoral degree. It is a pure joke and a true measure of who Abiy Ahmed is - essentially a fraud!

You are less than a fraud, because you admit that you are led by "a fraud" and you can't do anything to salvage your lazy a$$ from being whipped from behind by a fraud.
Go educate yourself, you lazy, why somebody confers that title to someone, to the honorables. Here below where you can start the journey. ሞሽላቃ ሌባ!
Have you ever been honored? How on earth?
Honor is earned!
While you were boycotting the promotion of educational effort in the country, the First Lady and her like minded honorable citizens were spending sleepless nights to give Ethiopian children the chance to eduction and persue their dream. Can you deny this? NO WAY!
Now you don't feel a shame to call those people "fraud" with your filthy mouth from thosands of miles away. Inept!
An honorary degree is an academic degree for which a university (or other degree-awarding institution) has waived all of the usual requirements. It is also known by the Latin phrases honoris causa ("for the sake of the honour") or ad honorem ("to the honour"). The degree is typically a doctorate or, less commonly, a master's degree, and may be awarded to someone who has no prior connection with the academic institution[1] or no previous postsecondary education. An example of identifying a recipient of this award is as follows: Doctorate in Business Administration (Hon. Causa).
The degree is often conferred as a way of honouring a distinguished visitor's contributions to a specific field or to society in general.[2]
It is sometimes recommended that such degrees be listed in one's curriculum vitae (CV) as an award, and not in the education section.[3] With regard to the use of this honorific, the policies of institutions of higher education generally ask that recipients "refrain from adopting the misleading title"[4] and that a recipient of an honorary doctorate should restrict the use of the title "Dr" before their name to any engagement with the institution of higher education in question and not within the broader community.[5]

This isn’t a debate with you if you got the impression that it was. It is about you owning up your irrational dispositions here. More importantly, it is about dispelling your irrational dispositions out of the minds of young and upcoming Ethiopians who get a chance to read this thread so that they be encouraged to pursue academy passionately.
Here are your irrational dispositions that needed to be dispelled by someone.
1. “Historically, the term philosophy was used to mean science. In fact, physics itself used to be called philosophy. Hence, doctor of philosophy means the highest level of scientific knowledge or expertise in a given field.”
Wrong. You equated getting a certificate for a demonstrated ability to do research independently to “the highest level of scientific knowledge or expertise in a given field.”
2. “This notion of PHD has essentially died in Ethiopia.”
Wrong again. I have given you but two examples of Ethiopian mothers that gave births to two of the brightest students who earned their Ph.D.s here in the U.S. I noticed their potentials when they were undergraduate students in college in Ethiopia. If I remember correctly, one of those mothers is from Addis Ababa and the other is from Ethiopia’s countryside.
I don’t think you have any idea that if you think mothers like those are dead in Ethiopia or the achievements of their sons here in the U.S. is dead, you are absolutely wrong. But two Ethiopian mothers along with their very bright sons and one of their teachers once upon a time are speaking directly to your absolutely wrong idea.
After your irrational dispositions were cornered you came back to state the following without acknowledging that you had erred.
3. “The ability to do independent research is yes one of the core requirements to become a doctor of philosophy in that field. You show that skill through dissertation research by hopefully proposing an original question and hopefully adding something new to the body of knowledge in that particular discipline. If not a new discovery, at least you have to know just about everything that has been done surrounding your dissertation question.”
Half true. The ability to do independent research is not one of, it is the only one, that should lead to the certification for a Doctor of Philosophy. Hello, that is the definition of Doctor of Philosophy.
If you haven’t added a new idea to a body of knowledge, that means you have no thesis in your dissertation. Hello, thesis means a new idea. A thesis leads to a peer-reviewed journal paper or papers, which, when accepted, means a record or records of the new idea.
I can give you a lecture about what a new idea sounds like. It is different from your word spaghetti.
As the saying goes, tell me about your family member and I will tell you who you are. Please don’t tell me that he is a fraternal prostitute in old Bush’s World Order. It didn’t exist when Doctor of Philosophy started.
I don’t need to say anything more about the honoraries since I have already stated we are on the same page about it.

You have been also recognized for your stockpiling of daipers below your bed for the rest of your life.
So, you both have got recognitions, but in different worlds, try to not mix the two worlds, else it is okay.

It has been said that language has a history of its own that parallels the history that DNA studies suggest.
Many scientific papers have been published based on DNA studies. I am convinced that many scientific papers will also be published based on studying the evolution of languages.
The late Ali Bira sang about ባይዽን ጄቸ ኬ or ያቃላትሽ ብዛት a long time ago. I do not know if he sang somebody else's observation or if it was his own observation that he expressed in art.
That observation precedes this one:
Who is the best Professor of Anthropology in the world that can explain this simple observation?
When many scientific papers get published based on these simple observations, ባይዽን ጄቸ ኬ may be remembered well as an original one.

We discussed about this issue before a year, now the university took it up and redeemed it.
We may going to remove academic issues from behind ethnic boundaries.
