According to the 1984 population and housing census, Eritrea had 2.6 million people whereas Tigray had 2.4 million. Eritrea, if I am correct, has not conducted any population census after that. All population estimates for the last decades could be based on estimates, may be or may be not using the 1984 census as baseline. On the other hand, the TPLF regime claimed to have taken population census twice, but all of which was all in all political. It published fake figure inflating Tigray population as well as which defy the natural logic of human reproduction. For instance, while Amhara population and Oromo population were each 12 million, TPLF just overwrite whatever figure it wish to meet its political objective. If anyone rembers, TPLF cancelled the population census result of Afar and Somalia region, becuase their population head count was larger than Tigray. TPLF forced Afar and Somalia region to carry out another census. Cut their population size so as the fake Tigray region be larger . (See page 9 on the following link). In short, the Ethiopian Population projection based on TPLF's last 2 censuses are all lies. This lie was even exposed and accepted in the parliamnet when 5 million Amhara were lost in the 2nd cenuses.

Whoever, there is one very obvious thing everyone knows, why is Birr very inflated while Eritrea currency is not. So, do not you think TPLF/OLF inflated the population as the Birr is?

If Eritrean population was 3 million in 1984, I bet it is 5-6 million now. Anyone who says/thinks 3 million is either ignorant or with an agenda.
Tigray's population, on the other hand, was 6 million up to 2018 and three/four years later it declined by 16.7% to 5 million.

The current population of Eritrea is 7.3 million people. In 1990, just one year prior to its independence, Eritrea’s child mortality rate was about 153 per 1000 children. By 2020, that figure had dramatically declined to 19 per 1000 children. Generally, the population of every developing country is expected to double every 27 years. Thus, given the population of Eritrea in 1984 was 2.6 million, in 2011 that population doubles itself to 5.2 million. For the remaining years between 2011 and now that population can be well above 6 million.
If one likes to compare the population rate of growth between Tigray and Eritrea, things to consider are:
- Birth Rate. For instance, I my opinion, contraceptive use is highly prevalent in Tigray. Assuming Eritrea population is intact with traditional moral values and values of children. I suspect Tigray of the last decades were open to all kinds of influence including use of birth control pills.
--- Death rate. Again, HIV/AIDS has been the number one killer in Ethiopia, before the current TPLF-OLF war. I suspect HIV/AIDS prevalence and fatality rate could be higher in Tigray than Eritrea. War and conflict could be factored in, but if significant, both sides might likely suffer equally. But war did not claim heavy tool during the Badme crisis – it was small.
---The other factor is the effect of out-migration. In this regard, I expect both Tigray and Eritrea experience heavy out-migration than in-migration. In this generation, most people, as in many African nation, aspires to leave for better opportunity - either wealthy or poor. TPLF, using its position of power, facilitated more out-migration often as refuge of other nationality, while in-migration from other regions of Ethiopia is none. Likewise, Eritrean due to the economic sanction migrated out. None of them has a positive net gain for both Eritrea and Tigary.
--- Nevertheless, the Tigray region faked its population size ( frauded the 1984) by producing fake statistics which totally negates logic of human biological reproduction.
Finally, unless a census is conducted it is hard to tell the true size of the population. For instance, right before the 1984 population census estimate for Ethiopia population was 27 million. But the census came up with a total population of 42 million.

"Eritrea’s population is an estimated 3.2 million, according to a non-public labor force survey for 2015-16 by the labor ministry that Bloomberg obtained independently and Luul [Eritrea’s Minister for Labour and Human Welfare Mrs. Luul Gebreab] said was authentic.

03 Sep 2018 – (EP) A survey funded by the UN Development Programme and Eritrea’s government for 2015-16 shows that Eritrea’s population is an estimated 3.2 million, according to Eritrea’s Minister for Labour and Human Welfare Mrs. Luul Gebreab.
In July 2017, the United State government had estimated Eritrea’s population to be just below 6 million at 5,918,919 using the same growth rate of the Sub Sahara countries.
The survey describes itself as Eritrea’s first-ever wide-ranging national labor force survey: it shows 18.5 percent of working people - 265,193 - serve in “public administration of state and community,” while agriculture is the biggest employer, with 43 percent. That description includes “national service,” Mrs. Luul said.
Presidential advisor Yemane Gebreab added 20 percent of Eritreans are in the national service and 80% civilian.
Information Minister Yemane G.Meskel said Eritrea’s deployable army forces at borders may count up to 20%, including “everyone not officially demobilized”.
According to Tom Killion, author of Historical Dictionary of Eritrea, the Eritrean Defence Forces (EDF) are among the largest in Africa alongside those of Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco.
“The size of Eritrea's population is small, particularly when compared to its neighbors. During peacetime, the military of Eritrea numbers approximately 45,000 with a reserve force (pictured) of approximately 250,000 – 300,000”, he wrote.
