The addis ababa adminstration under Adanech abebe proposed to develop the mercato area entirely as commercial district.under the proposal religious sites will be relocated and business people and the community will be required to pitch in financially.
according to the plan , land is designated further out from mesalemia area to build new church and mosque.the historic Anwar mosque , the adjacent church and buildings are earmarked for demolition.
the proposal is on hold for now and if there is any formal public consultation to take place remains to be seen.
