Afwerki treats his own family members as he treats his subordinates. His youngest son, Berhane Isaias Afwerki, who got frustrated with the dysfunctional corrupt system and his father’s abusive treatment, attempted to flee the country illegally a few years ago!
He was intercepted by border patrols while preparing to be smuggled out from the border town of Tessenei.
