I think Africa population has to grow significantly higher for this continent. Africa is under populated through a number of factors historically, to mention one or two - slave trade, colonization and war.

The more than 54 countries of Africa has the total population of either of the single country of India or China. I do not know why the UN is obsessed with Africa. Could you imagine if there were no war in Ethiopia for the last 50 years where would Ethiopia be economically? While the world is sponsoring war funding rebel thugs eating up resources of the country they are concerning about population growth defying misery and adversaries.

Ethiopia's Population in 1970 (Janhoy Zemen) was 28.3M

Africa is largely underpopulated but also under-developed. Meaning the overpopulation of Africa creates more and more hardships and economic challenges instead of blessings.

No, Ethiopia is underpopulated as are other African countries. This is the propaganda and advocacy work of birth control or the pill industry. African scholar calls birth control as bitter pill to control the reproduction of Africans. Population is a resource. More Ethiopians are dying from war than from famine. If population a factor of development, development is a factor for population. Meaning, development will take care of population not the vice versa. In a developed economy, families limit their family size. Do not be scammed by this UN propaganda, it sounds like the Pretoria deal  The devil is either in the detail or in the intended consequence of the rhetoric.

At least it's not the world's fastest-emptying country.

Imagine Ethiopia being "the fourth fastest growing nation in population" and at the same time the world's fastest-emptying country! This would seriously have scared the sh.it outta the world!
