Lily Yohannes signed her first contract with the Ajax Women on Thursday. The agreement runs from June 30, 2023 to June 30, 2026. Fifteen-year-old Yohannes will join the Ajax Women's selection from the summer.

Yohannes was born on June 12, 2007 in Springfield, America and has been playing in the Ajax Women's Talent Team since this season. Before that, the midfielder had been part of Ajax's Talent Academy for a number of years, while she still played for a WV-HEDW boys' team in Amsterdam.



Since the summer of last year, Yohannes has been playing fully in the Ajax Women's Talent Team. She currently has seventeen league games to her name. She scored four times and provided six assists.

Yohannes, who also has American nationality, plays for the representative youth teams of the US.

ቅድሚ 30 ዓመታት፡ ካብ 23 – 25 ሚያዝያ 1993፡ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ኣብ ውሽጥን ወጻእን፡ ኣብ ኣዝዩ ኣገዳሲ ሃገራዊ ውራይ’ዩ ተጸሚዱ ነይሩ – ረፈረንደም። ኣብ መጀመርያ 1950ታት፡ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ከም ኩለን ኣብ ትሕቲ መግዛእቲ ዝነበራ ሃገራት ኣፍሪቃ፡ ናጽነቱ ክረክብ ዝነበሮ ሕጋውን ባህሪያውን መሰል ምስ ተነፍጎን ዘካየዶ ሰላማዊ ቃልሲ ብዓሎቕ ምስ ተመለሰሉን፡ ኣብ ጎቦ ኣዳል ብዝነቀወት ጥይት ዝፈለሞ ዕጥቃዊ ቃልሲ ኣብ ዓወት ድሕሪ ምብጽሑ፡ ህዝባዊ ግንባር ሓርነት ኤርትራ ብወለንትኡ፡ ሓራን ርትዓውን ምርጫ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ብመገዲ ረፈረንደም ክረጋገጽ ወሲኑ።

ህዝቢ ኤርትራ፡ መሰሉ ንምኽሓድን ተቓውሞኡ ንምድሃኽን ዝተሃቀነ ተኸታታሊ ናይ ሓይሊ ብድዐ መኪቱን ስዒሩን፡ ብ24 ግንቦት 1991 ሓርነቱ ኪጭብጥ ክኢሉ’ዩ። ምስናይ’ዚ ግን፡ ብኣዋጅቊ.22/1992 ንመስርሕ ረፈረንደም ዘሳልጥ ኮሚሽን ብምቛም፡ ሕግታትን ኣገባባትን ሓንጺጹ፣ ኣህጉራውያን ተዓዘብቲ ብቐንዱ ድማ ናይ ውድብ ሕቡራት ሃገራት ክሳተፍዎ’ውን ዓዲሙ።

ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ከኣ፡ ሃገራዊ ሕድሪ ኣልዒሉ፡ ብስልጡን ባህሊን ብምሉእ ስነ-ስርዓትን ወኒን ተዓጢቑሉ። ኣብ መወዳእታ ድማ፡ ውጽኢት ናይ’ቲ “ኤርትራ፡ ናጻን ልኡላውነት ዘለዋን ሃገር ክትከውን ትድግፍዶ?” ዝብል ሕቶ፡99.8% “እወ ንናጽነት” ኰነ። እቲ ብደም ዝተረጋገጸ መሰል ከኣ፡ ብድምጺ – ኣብ ቅድሚ ዓለም ተደግመ።

እዚ ውጽኢት’ዚ ሃንደበታውን ትጽቢት ዘይተገብረሉን ኣይነበረን። እቲ ጉዳይ፡ ናይ ሓደ ህዝቢ ናይ ምዃንን ዘይምዃንን ሕቶ ስለዝነበረ፡ ፍሉጥን ርዱእን’ዩ ነይሩ። ኣዕጋብን ቅቡልን ታሪኻዊ መደምደምታ ምርጫ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ኰይኑ ድማ፡ ኣብ ታሪኽ ብወርቂ ቀለም ተመዝጊቡ ይርከብ። ከም ውጽኢት ናይ’ዚ፡ ብ24 ግንቦት 1993 -ኤርትራ መበል 182 ኣባል ውድብ ሕቡራት ሃገራት ብምዃን፡ ኣብ ዓለም ግቡእ ቦታኣን ክብራን ክትጭብጥ በቒዓ።

ረፈረንደም እምበኣር፡ መረጋገጺ ፍትሓውነት ነዊሕ ሃገራዊ ቃልስና’ዩ። ኣብ መሰልካ ምጽናዕን ንፍትሒ ምውፋይን፡ ውዒሉ ሓዲሩ ከምዘዕውት ዘረጋግጽ መርትዖ ድማ’ዩ።

እዚ ታሪኻዊ ፍጻመ’ዚ፡ ድሕሪ 43 ዓመታት ናይ’ቲ ውድብ ሕቡራት ሃገራት፡ ሕጋውን ባህሪያውን መሰል ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ንናጽነት ብምንፋግ፡ ኤርትራ ብፈደረሽን ምስ ኢትዮጵያ ክትቊረን ዘሕለፎን ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ናጽነቱ ንምርግጋጽ ከቢድ ዋጋ ዘኽፈሎ ዕጥቃዊ ቃልሲ ከካይድ ዝደፋፍኦን ውሳነ ቊጽሪ 390A(V) እዩ ስዒቡ። ኣብ ወግዓዊ ሰነዳት ኮሚሽን ረፈረንደም ኤርትራ ሰፊሮም ዘለዉ ኣሃዛት’ውን፡ ምስ’ቲ ህዝብና ዘርኣዮ ጭውነትን ምሒር ድሌት ንናጽነትን፡ ንማሕበረሰብ ዓለም ንጹር መልእኽቲ’ዮም ኣመሓላሊፎም።

እዚ ቅድሚ 30 ዓመታት ዝተገብረ ታሪኻዊ ሕጋዊ መደምደምታ፡ ኣብ’ቲ ድሕሪ 1997 ናጽነት ኤርትራ ንምቕልባስ ዝተጋህደ ዕብዳንን ቅሉዕ ወራራትን፡ ንሓይሊ መኸተ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ተወሳኺ ድርዒ’ዩ ኰይኑ። ህላወ ኤርትራ ካብ ካርታ ዓለም ንምሕካኽ ንዝተኻየደ ውዲታት ኣብ ምዕጋስ’ውን ቀሊል ዘይኰነ ተራ’ዩ ነይርዎ። ውሳነ ረፈረንደም እምበኣር፡ንቕድሚት ዝጠመተ -መርኣያ ስልጡን ህዝብን ብሱል መሪሕነትን’ዩ ነይሩ።

Eritrean-American Lily Yohannes the daughter of Daniel Yohannes and Semhar Bokretsion and the grand daughter of the legendary Bokretsion Gebrehiwot, signed her first contract with the Ajax Women this week.

Lily was born on June 12, 2007 in Springfield, Virginia. She has two siblings, one of which, Ethen Yohannes plays for Wake Forest University and the US under 15-17 national team.

The young lady has been playing in the Ajax Women’s Talent Team, since this past season. The offensive midfield play-maker had been part of Ajax’s Talent Academy for a number of years, while she still played for a WV-HEDW boys’ team in Amsterdam.

In 17 league games she has scored 4 times and has 6 assists, as she makes headlines in women’s football/soccer. Lily represents the US national team as of now, but who knows may be her chances of representing Eritrea could be wide open in the future.



The contract agreement between Lily and Ajax is a 3 year contract that runs until June 30, 2026. Lily is an amazing talent and is an inspiration to many, as she continues to become a successful athlete and young lady. Meanwhile, where did Lily and her siblings get the their genes? Here is a short story of her proud Eritrean grandfather, that has left a huge legacy for Eritreans and Eritrean-Americans. The legendary Bokretsion Gebrehiwot who was a big part of the Dallas, Texas Eritrean community.



In the 1968 African nations cup out of the many Eritreans on the Ethiopian national team that included the great Ambassador Girma Asmerom and many others, legendary Bokretsion Gebrehiwot will go down in history as one of Africa’s best. His goal vs legendary Laurent Poku and the Ivory Coast in the 86th minute from the defensive position, always remains in many people’s hearts. As if that was not enough the great Bokre, as he was known, helped his club team Hammasien FC win many championships.

After leaving Eritrea and the horn of Africa to come to the United States, he also left a huge legacy for many of us Eritreans. Him and the many other legendary Eritrean players created the Eritrean Sports Festival, in North America. Bokre was also known to be an ardent Eritrean nationalist, who supported Eritrea’s struggle for independence by contributing in many different ways.
