The poor John Nash was suffering from mental disorder called Schizophrenia which made him to hallucinate, hear voices which doesn't exist, delusion, paranoia, having diminished emotional expression and apathy.
The 50-60 was a period of the culmination of the Cold War on which both the Soviet Union and America struggled for ideological and geopolitical global dominance. John Nash hallucinated that he was working for the department of defense to crack Russian codes and save the western world from nuclear extinctions. For instance, He was so scared of the Soviet Union to the extend, he thought that all men who wore red ties were part of communist conspiracy against him.
