After death of Meles in 2012, Leslie Lefkow,
hrw's then deputy Africa director urged Ethiopia to build on Meles' positive legacy.
She claimed that he left,
a mixed legacy on human rights
despite his perpetrating 2 decades of state terror & massacres!
Leslie's whitewashing of Meles'/TPLF's crimes is understandable since TPLF loyally served US/EU interests, even if ill-conceived. Indeed, Meles was brutal & they knew it. But, he was their guy! Contrast Hrw's treatment of Meles with Abiy, who's NOT a US favorite!
Strangely, Hrw seemed ok with some US policies that is not typical of a supposed human rights defender-Ken Roth only considered how big of a bombing Obama would give Syria. Didn't object to it! Assad is bad, but does bombing Syria solve issue or hurt more people?
Hrw's Malinowski, justified Obama continuing rendition (sending suspects to torture). I don't know how anyone, let alone an HR defender, can justify torture. Malinowski previously worked for the Clinton administration, including at the NSC.
Many in Hrw, had previously worked for US administrations. So it's no surprise, that this connection shapes Hrw's objectives & actions.
There have been instances of Hrw being hungry for money & wanting to get it at any cost. Ken Roth asking for money, in exchange for no criticism. Looks like an extortion!
Moral bankruptcy of the HRs defender!!
Hrw seems primarily concerned NOT with human rights advocacy, but a selective & often corrupted use of human rights for ulterior motives. It's a foreign policy tool the US & EU use & the Ken Roth's are just the executioners, that get paid handsomely for the job!
Human rights protection is noble & necessary! Agreed Eritrea & Ethiopia have work to do, in that area. But hrw's Ken Roth & co. are using it to derail the peace & cooperation between Eritrea, Ethiopia & Somalia & ultimately harm this noble cause!

As MLK Jr. correctly pointed out, the US is the greatest purveyor of violence in the world. Since WW2, the US has initiated more than 60 military interventions in foreign countries. US/NATO proxy war in Ukraine, brings them in direct confrontation with a major Nuclear Power.
