Upside down - Why Ethiopians love "ተራ"

Post by temari » 15 Nov 2022, 16:39

Normal economy says you should open up your store in places where there is little or no concurrence but in Ethiopia it is the opposite. You would get much more customers and more revenues if more stores with the same items are at one place. If your store is isolated, then most people don't come to a single store to buy but rather people want to have options to compare quality and price in the nearby area. It is upside down but it seems it works for us, both for the customer and the seller. I think that is why we love "ተራ" - አትክልት ተራ፣ ሰንጋ ተራ፣ በግ ተራ፣ ቅቤ ተራ

Location is always the significant factor for business success ; i.e profit and business survival. When one talks about location, mainly it could be its convenience for customers or presence/absence of similar competing businesses in the area. Competition often is factor for large business, not necessarily for small or microbusinesses, large businesses in the area can take out small ones. In the case of Ethiopia, it is more of being convenient and these businesses are small scale - they carry consumer items. Given the large size of the population, people do not have any option other than buying; and sellers market is not as well threatened by the presence of other competitors. Whatever is on the market is can be sold out.
