Abiy rules out dialogue with TPLF during meeting with three AU envoys, a day after he announced ‘final phase’ of three-week conflict.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has again ruled out dialogue with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) during a meeting with three African Union special envoys.
Abiy told the envoys trying to end the deadly conflict between Ethiopian troops and forces loyal to the TPLF that he is willing to speak to representatives “operating legally” in the northern Tigray region, The Associated Press news agency reported on Friday.
The meeting occurred as people fled the regional capital, Mekelle, in fear of an imminent assault after Abiy on Thursday announced the “final phase” of the three-week offensive.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Abiy’s office said the government was committed to the “protection and security of civilians” in Tigray.
There was no immediate word from the three AU envoys: Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former Mozambique President Joaquim Chissano and former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe.

Ethiopia: Govt Rejects AU Offer to Mediate Tigray Conflict

Ethiopia on Saturday rejected a mediation offer from the African Union, with officials in Addis Ababa falling short of calling the office of the continental body's chairperson a purveyor of false news.
Hours after South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the current AU Chairperson, appointed three ex-presidents to mediate in the Tigray conflict, Ethiopia termed reporting on the mediation fake news.
"PM Abiy Ahmed will be meeting the chairperson's special envoys to speak with them one on one," said a statement posted on the Prime Minister's official Twitter page on Saturday.
"News circulating that the envoys will be traveling to Ethiopia to mediate between the federal government and TPLF's criminal element is fake."
Those appointed
On Friday, President Ramaphosa appointed a team of 'Distinguished States Persons' to help end the conflict that has raged for the last two weeks as Ethiopian forces battle the Tigray People's Liberation Front.
