Low-key peace talks begin between Ethiopian government and Tigrayan rebels
In Ethiopia, talks are quietly resuming between the government of Abiy Ahmed and the Tigrayan rebels of the TPLF. After a five-month truce, fighting resumed in late August. But while the two camps make no progress on the ground, they meet in Djibouti at the initiative of the United States.

It is the first meeting for two weeks and the resumption of intense fighting in northern Ethiopia. A delegation from the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan representatives from the TPLF met on Thursday for confidential talks in Djibouti. These discussions are organized by the American envoy for the Horn of Africa, Mike Hammer, who has been in Ethiopia since last week.
The two camps know the beginnings well, they had already met there secretly during the Humanitarian truce to agree on the terms of a peace process. At the time, only two months ago, negotiations seemed very close, assure various diplomatic sources, before finally the war resumed at the end of August.
Several days of discussions
The points of discussion remain the same: mainly the signing of a ceasefire and the end of the blockade of Tigray. Two thornier issues will also have to be overcome. The intervention of the Eritrean army in the war alongside Addis Ababa, and the future of Wolkait, a disputed strip of land west of Tigray.
According to someone close to the TPLF, these discussions should take several days.
