Without bases in Syria Putin loses positions in Mediterranean - U.S. general

The loss of military bases in Syria in the event of the overthrow of the Bashar Assad regime would deprive Vladimir Putin of the ability to influence the situation in the Mediterranean.
This opinion was expressed by the former commander of the U.S. Army European Command, General Mark Hertling (Ret.), who spoke with CNN, reports Ukrinform.
Hertling recalled that there are Russian naval and air bases in Syria.
"Both of those bases give him (Putin - ed.) access to the Mediterranean. Once he loses that because of a potential overthrow of Assad, he has lost capability to influence the Mediterranean," the former commander said.

He stressed that Russia has also lost some of its influence in the Black Sea based on the ongoing war with Ukraine, and Russian naval bases in the Baltics, in Kaliningrad, are also under threat.
“You’re seeing Putin being really tossed into a corner. These bases are all critical to their military presence in these areas, and the increased rebel activity in northern Syria and the Turkish incursions have heightened concerns about the Russian supply routes even into the area,” Hertling stressed.
The general added that the Russians are facing economic problems and reduced assistance from allies.
“As calm as Putin and his spokesman may appear to be, they don’t reason to feel very good about what is going on,” Hertling believes.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes that Russia is evacuating naval forces from its base in the Syrian city of Tartus. This may indicate that the Kremlin has no intention of sending significant reinforcements to support the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the short term.

Blasts in Kerch shipyard area in occupied Crimea

Witnesses report a series of explosions near the shipyard in the city of Kerch, temporarily occupied Crimea.
This was reported by the Crimean Wind Telegram channel, Ukrinform saw.
“In Kerch, there is a rumble in the area of the Zalyv Shipyard and some kind of glow is visible in Arshintseve,” the report reads.
Later, it was reported that Ukrainian naval drones were trying to make a breakthrough in the Kerch Strait, and that the Russian military was trying to destroy them from the sea, coast, and air.

Also, according to the Crimean Wind monitoring group, a powerful e-warfare system has been activated near the Kerch Bridge.
“AIS system data is distorted. The location of vessels is supposedly determined on land as they gather in a sort of a whirlpool ", the report says.
Earlier, Ukrinform reported that on November 28, in the temporarily occupied Crimea, intelligence operatives destroyed Russia’s low-altitude radar worth $5 million.

British intelligence shows consequences of Ukrainian strike on Russian S-400 in Crimea

The Ukrainian defense forces successfully targeted the positions of a Russian S-400 air defence system in temporarily occupied Crimea.
The UK Ministry of Defence posted this on social media platform X, citing intelligence data, Ukrinform reports.
“On 29 November 2024, Ukrainian Armed Forces destroyed elements of a S-400 air defence system in Simferopol, Crimea,” the ministry said.
It is noted that social media highlighted an explosion and detonation of rocket fuel associated with the destruction of air defence system components.
“Two impact craters measuring 13.5m, dispersed debris and five emergency response vehicles were identified from imagery,” the ministry added.
The Ministry of Defence also recalled that this is the second successful targeting of Russian S-400 air defence systems by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in November, following the destruction of a S-400 air defence system in Kursk region on 23 November.
As reported by Ukrinform, an explosion occurred in the village of Vityne in temporarily occupied Crimea. A Russian S-400 missile defense system may have been targeted.

Russian general eliminated by SBU – source

The explosion that killed Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the chief of the radiation, chemical and biological defense troops of the Russian Armed Forces, was a special operation carried out by Ukraine's SBU State Security Service.
A well-informed source from the SBU told this to Ukrinform.
According to the source, an explosive device attached to an electric scooter detonated as Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov and his assistant entered the entrance of a residential apartment building on Ryazansky Prospekt in Moscow, killing both.
"Kirillov was a war criminal and a completely legitimate target, since he gave orders to use banned chemical weapons against the Ukrainian military. Such an inglorious end awaits all who kill Ukrainians. Retribution for war crimes is inevitable," the source said.
Earlier reports said that Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the head of the radiation, chemical and biological defense troops of the Russian Armed Forces, had been killed along with his assistant in an explosion on Ryazansky Prospekt in Moscow.
Kirillov, 54, had served as the chief of the radiation, chemical, and biological protection troops since May 2017. He played a pivotal role in the development and deployment of the TOS-2 Tosochka heavy flamethrower system within the Russian military.
On December 16, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) officially charged Kirillov in absentia, accusing him of war crimes.
Since the start of the full-scale war, Ukrainian authorities have documented over 4,800 cases of chemical munitions being used against Ukrainian forces. These incidents include the use of K-1 combat grenades containing toxic irritants such as CS and CN.

Explosions heard in Lgov, Kursk region

Explosions were reported in the city of Lgov in Russia's Kursk region late on December 30.
That is according to the Telegram channel ASTRA, Ukrinform reports.
Acting Governor of Kursk Region, Alexander Khinshtein, confirmed the strike on the city, noting that "currently, there have been no reports of casualties or significant damage."
Emergency and municipal services are working at the scene, Khinshtein stated, adding: "I am keeping the situation under control."

Ukraine’s air raid targets Russian defense industry facilities disguised as civil factories

The head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Andriy Kovalenko, says Ukraine attacked “disguised” defense industry facilities in Russia’s Rostov and Leningrad regions.
That’s according to the official’s post on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.
"Disguised defense industry facilities were attacked in Russia’s Rostov and Leningrad regions. Russia is passing off defense plants as civil ones, trying to hide their actual production. But we are aware of everything," the report says.

According to media reports, factories in Russia are on fire after a drone attack. A blaze broke out in an industrial zone in Gatchina, Leningrad region, where an “acetone plant” is in flames. A large fire also broke out in Rostov region at the PlastFactor plant.

200 to 1,100 km deep into Russia: General Staff confirms massive strike on military facilities

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that on the night of January 14, the Defense Forces carried out a large-scale strike on military targets 200 to 1,100 kilometers deep into the territory of Russia.
The General Staff reported this on Facebook, according to Ukrinform.
Targets in the Bryansk, Saratov, Tula regions and the Republic of Tatarstan were hit.
Another successful attack was launched on the Kristall oil storage facility in Engels, Saratov region, where a fire that lasted five days after the previous attack has been just extinguished. The repeated strike was conducted by units of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR).

The Bryansk Chemical Plant in the town of Seltso, a strategic facility of the Russian military- industrial complex, was also hit. The plant produces ammunition for cannon artillery, multiple launch rocket systems, aircraft, engineering ammunition and components for Kh-59 cruise missiles. Secondary detonation was observed on the territory of the plant, which lasted several hours. In addition, the attack destroyed two anti-aircraft missile systems - Tor and Buk.
Units of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Special Operations Forces, Missile Forces, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as the HUR and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) were involved in this combat mission.
In addition, units of the HUR and SBU struck strategic facilities of Russia’ military-industrial complex - the Saratov Oil Refinery and the Kazanorgsintez plant. A fire broke out at both facilities.
Targeted and systematic operations to destroy facilities that supply ammunition, military equipment and fuel to the Russian army will continue until Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine is completely stopped, the General Staff assured.
As reported by Ukrinform, the Russian army’s total combat losses in Ukraine from February 2022 to January 14, 2025 amounted to about 811,090 troops, including another 1,330 invaders killed or wounded over the past day.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day: honoring victims of Holocaust

On Monday, January 27, Ukraine and the international community commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.
The International Holocaust Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 27, was established by the UN General Assembly on November 1, 2005 (Resolution No. 60/7), as reported by Ukrinform.
The resolution reads: “The Holocaust, which resulted in the murder of one third of the Jewish people, along with countless members of other minorities, will forever be a warning to all people of the dangers of hatred, bigotry, racism and prejudice.”
On January 27, 1945, the 1st Ukrainian Front liberated one of the largest Nazi death camps – Auschwitz-Birkenau.
During World War II, six million Jews became victims of Nazi policies aimed at eliminating those considered a “threat” or “inferior.” Around 1.5 million of these victims were from the territory of modern-day Ukraine.
“However, the last year of Russia's war against Ukraine has starkly demonstrated that passive remembrance of genocidal crimes is not enough to prevent their repetition. The minimum necessary is active reflection and dialogue to ensure a constant awareness within society of how social aggression mechanisms work. It also requires vigilance from international institutions to address systemic human rights violations by authoritarian regimes, ensuring that hateful ideologies do not re-emerge under new, less obvious guises. In addition, preventing future genocides requires resolute and just condemnation and punishment of the organizers and perpetrators of such crimes today. And it also requires a readiness to act proactively,” the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory notes.
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, key Holocaust memorial sites in the country have been attacked by the Russian forces.
On March 1, 2022, just 80 years after the mass executions by Nazis at Babyn Yar in Kyiv – where about 100,000 civilians and prisoners, including Jews and Roma, Red Army soldiers, communists, Ukrainian nationalists, prisoners of the Syrets concentration camp, and even patients from Pavlov Psychiatric Hospital were murdered – Russia launched a missile attack on Babyn Yar, which is a symbol of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe.
In 2022, Russian shells also hit the central monument of the Drobytskyi Yar Memorial in Kharkiv, a known site of mass executions of civilians, primarily Jews, by the Nazis during World War II. Estimates suggest that between 14,000 and 20,000 victims of Nazism are buried there.
This day serves as a reminder of the importance of never forgetting the atrocities of the past to prevent their repetition in the future.
